Dover Lane Music Festival
This January Calcutta music gathering brings together some greats of Hindustani music. I am no connoisseur but I am sure afficiandos of the sitar and sarod would be in ecstasy. Even some Karnatic (south Indian) music, plus a little classical dance. I really like listening to the violin and mridangam played by Karnatic maestros. And listening to a sorod master playing in Calgary once I was actually transcending (as any TM meditator for an explanation)
Tickets are hard to come by so I waited for hawkers just before opening. The price is on my posting about itemized expenses under polls.
My only complaint was that each artist did his or her work Indian style - that is for ever (like all night) rather than a 90 minute sample.
The DLMF is a great way to meet socialites of Calcutta's high society (OK, so they can be boring, like the affete Bengali who liked to quote obscure western authors) but there were also a few travellers. Tea and coffee allnight outside for the marathon concerts.
I dislike Calcutta except for cultural life. Even the 'nightlife' is lousy compared to five years ago. This is what happens when red zones go from mafia controlled to police controlled. It goes from dangerous but *interesting* to safe but boring.
