Dec. 07 : movie suggestions please

Khoya Khoya Chand -- yes, too bad the story didn't work well enough, though as a story there was nothing wrong with it, just something unsuccessful in its emotional pacing I thought.

Though that is one that I would not want to see without subtitles, as for all its limitations its ambition is to be more of a straight story than a conventional entertainer, hence few song performances.

I loved its art direction and I particularly like it for bringing together the movies of the fifties and the quality of the milieu of Bollywood in the fifties, that I only know about from biographies. And I like its songs a lot.

Sticking to what is or might be in theatres, though you are now back from India - right now it's not much and as I've followed Hindi movies more carefully I've noticed this is a lean time of year. There's something opening tomorrow which ought to be worth seeing, Bombay to Bangkok, directed by Nagesh Kukunor, who's usually interesting and good, and usually non-traditional-format -- no songs, though in this one we'll have them.

(Most recent movie I think was Dor, closer to art-house though with a good budget and production values, about a woman who goes to Rajasthan to find the widow of a man her husband was accused of killing. Funniest was Bollywood Calling. )
