Dec. 07 : movie suggestions please
Namaste Friends,
In India in december 07, I would very much appreciate suggestions of movies to go and see in movie theaters. I've already taken note of Anar's post and will definitely try that one. My interest is in movies in general, not just Bollywood's. And I don't speak hindi, but that doesn't stop me. I'm a screenwriter so I can usually guess the action and dialogue about right - except for the jokes and song lyrics which I'm always sorry to miss. Thanks for your ideas ! |

Very good movie Indeed..
However if OP is looking for Indian Stuff then try Taare Zameen Par.. This is an Aamir Khan movie, and everything that man does is special...he is responsible for giving Indian cinema some of its greatest masterpieces...commercial and meaningful go hand in hand for Mr. Khan... he enjoys similar status as Shahrukh Khan...but is much more reserved...the question remains unanswered..the opinion is equally divided on who is better...Aamir OR Shahrukh.. |

I would suggest Khoya Khoya Chand - as I know, it's release date is 7 Dec. It's a movie about Hindi film industry of 50-60's, and the director - Sudhir Mishra - is one of the best indian directors for now. I think it'll be not just an entertainment, but a good script and very good perfomances too (and the music is excellent - it's the best soundtrack of 2007 IMO)

I can suggest you two big Hindi movies going to hit the screen today on the eve of Diwali ( Festival of Lights ) and both of them are suppose to be super hits, OM SHANTI OM & SAAWARIA. Try these.

IMers are just the best. This is exactly the info I was looking for. Thank you so much, Edwardseco, Shashank, Wichy and Rakesh, for the suggestions. Wichy, I must say I am particularly attracted by the subject matter of Khoya Khoya Chand, I love movies about movies. And I love a good soundtrack. Not familiar with the director though, will do some research and hopefully get DVDs of former films. Shashank, you hit my weak spot, am an Amir Khan fan ; my opinion is nowhere near divided on this matter . And yes, I'm more interested in Indian movies. But I never tried watching a US blockbuster in an Indian cinema, so I might indulge in the one Edwardseco recommended, just as some tourists enjoy a pizza from time to time. Rakesh, many thanks - since the movies you mention just get released this week they'll still be around when I get there on Dec. 2. If new movies attract your attention before Dec.2, please be kind enough to post them here. I'm a 3-movies-a-day person so be sure I'll follow your advice. (Okay, 3 western movies a day, but still... )Happy Diwali and many thanks ! |

Chameli - another movie of Sudhir Mishra - is very good too. As for some other December releases - it's Aaja Naachle - comeback project with Madhuri Dixit, one of the best dancer and good actress in Hindi cinema. And I'm interested in Dus Kahaniyaan - the movie with has about 5 directors and 10 different stories in it - sounds promising. It has a good soundtrack too :-) |

If you are brave, see "Taxidermia". The best film I've seen for many years - and I'm a film academic. But too 'gutsy' for most mere mortals: it probably won't make general release in India.

Hi All,
Shashank : Quote:
? Agree with you that SRK always acts the same way. And Dil is, for the moment, my favourite AK movie, maybe because I saw it in a very nice theater in Jaipur.Wichy : Superb recommendations, thanks. Particularly intrigued by the 5-director movie, as I just finished working on a similar film. And I just checked and found out that most of Sudhir Mishra's movies are available here in Paris on DVD. Here goes another hole in my holiday budget... Zipzipzip : is that the "Taxidermia" I saw last year in Cannes, the movie from Hungary ? If so, then I'm sorry I wasn't as impressed by the movie as you were. Not that I was shocked, on the contrary, I kept waiting for the advertised shock to happen, and got bored. But then grotesque images don't shock me, only strong stories do. Different people, different tastes... Still it's brave of you to advertise such a controversial film, and I'm with you there : people should be encouraged to go to movies, no matter what, and make their own opinions. Thank you All ! ![]() |

My fav of SRK is Asoka - can watch it over and over again, the music, the visuals, perfomances - everything is soooo good... It's a puty it was not good at the box-office. And I love Shah's perfomance in it - much better than his usual works.

Wichy, that's very interesting, coming from the dance and music specialist I understand you are. The (Keralese) guy at my Indian video club in Paris advised against Asoka, without too much detail, but I'm not sure he appreciated what you saw in it. Will give it a try.
Shashank, please, please report on the movie ! Will love to hear what you thought of it. Enjoy ! Oh, and by the way, about how much does a ticket cost these days ? I'll go in Mumbai, Mysore and Aurangabad. Thanks ! |

And on OSO... we were so much bored from the illogical stuff that we wanted to walk out 30 minutes before the end of the movie... Its again a movie about Cinema, 70s to be precise and if you are Nostalgic about 70's bollywood then it is for you...the retro look, over the MOUNTAIN acting...anyways a good treat for SRK fans..I don't think he is off the screen for more than 5 minutes in the entire movie... |
