Why are we in the Sikkim section?

Think I'll shift this to the books music and movies section.

In the secret space of dreams,
Where, dreaming, I lay amazed...

When the sky was yellow and the Sun was blue............
Thanks Alan for moving me & Nick for the lines.
Yes the lyrics at times reach an etheral level. Jerry often talked about X Chemistry. That kind of reaction took place only at times when the musicians, the music, the emotional invocation induced by the lyrics & the listeners all gets fused in a completely different kind of existance not just experience.

So let me know your mind Uncle John

Grateful dead lyrics can be absolute rubbish! Look at Dark Star! But there are moments... And some of the complete nonsense is pretty damned good!

I think they ever managed much real profundity, in the way that Steven Stills or Joanie Mitchell did, but I guess that when I listen to stuff from that era (with exceptions) I realise that it was written by very young people pretending to know much more about life than they actually did! (just like I was at the time )

But the combined effect, music and lyrics, of the Dead still has a punch, an energy, a drive, a joy, that is unique.

It has been a very long time since I felt moved enough to post on indiamike but I've been inspired. Thanks so much for meshing two of the great loves/passions in my life: traveling in India and the Grateful Dead. Attics of my life was always such a favorite of mine and I was so fortunate to catch it in concert twice.

I agree that the lyrics can at times be silly and at times ethereal but that is the wonder of Robert Hunter's lyrics as they are always changing. The situation changes and the words go deeper- always guiding us to see new aspects- to shed new light.

For me when I listen to the Dead I am brought to that place of quietness, of supreme ecstacy where spinning to the music, balloons bouncing overhead, and Jerry on Stage when I can sigh and say to myself "this is what it is all about". Those moments of transcentory light that fill the soul and let us give the primordial sigh of ecstacy amid all of the chaos of life.

There is Nothing,
Absolutely nothing,
Like a
Grateful Dead Concert

Wish I'd seen more, but they never seemed to want to visit UK...
Quite apart from the magic of the music, there is the excellence of the sound system (the only Really Loud Music I've ever heard that did not make my ears hurt)

So, come with me ...or go alone!

They did play on 3 occasions in London. I have sent the stage lists to dear Alan. One of the saddest moments of my life had been a windswept day near Rishikesh where we consigned a part of Jerry's mortal remains to the Ganga with Bob.
The sound systems were great looked after by very competent people. They always supported taping of their music, I have excellent tapings which I have transferred to DAT & eventualy on to CD's hpefully someday I will share these with IMers.

Yes, I saw them years ago, maybe even twice (the brain cells, RIP), but I definately saw them when they last played here.

I remember driving to Wembley, thinking "I hate crowds and noise, why am I going to rock concert?", I hadn;t followed the Dead's (or any other rock) music for a decade or more. But it was magic. One of the things that impressed me was the absense of celebrity glitz on stage: just a bunch of folk making music.

I'm glad to hear that Jerry is partly in the Ganges, although I wish he was still playing and singing. You were lucky (OK, not the right word...) to be part of that.

Thanks, Ananda: I guess I saw them in '74 and '90.

Don't know how I managed to miss out on two visits in '81

The 1974 shows were at the Alexandra Palace. Sounds familiar?

The 1981 shows were at the Rainbow Theatre.

They actually played 6 times.
I forgot they played there first show in England on May,24,1970 at a festival in Newcastle, England. So that makes a grand total of 22 shows in England.
Here are some pics from that show.
