Dalrymple, The Jehad of 1857

I have read most of his books with great interest, which is why I await "The Last Mughal".

Meanwhile, here is his article from todays Times of India about the 1857 uprising against the British in India.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/a...how/320404.cms

I can see that this is going to please nobody. Not some among the British, who like to pretend their occupation of India was benevolent. Not the extreme Hindus or Muslims, who like to believe that there were deep divisions between them all through history.

It would please me, though. As an example, there is still a feeling among some sections of the chatterati in India that the British did more good than harm, and this always offends me.

Whatever, he researches and writes well. And he doesn't have any hidden agendas. (the unhidden one may be that he wants to sell the book!)

And it will be a crash course in part of Indian history for many

IndiaMike.com would not exist as it does today without the British invasion. ... The Queen would not have as many jewels either!

Can't wait to read the book though ... thanks for the gr8 teaser CM.

Dalrymple is a self proclaimed lover of Delhi. So much of history in Delhi & most of the travelers opt for flying in to India thru Delhi & want to leave next day. Can't really understand why.
CH are you reading this? What is your view point?

I've been guilty of this, too, before I read The City of Djinns. Now I could kick myself for not spending more time in Delhi. That will all change on my next trip to India!

dzibead you are welcome, at least you have a "next time" some don't.
Apart from history there is no other city where you can watch so many cultural events other than Delhi.
Another message is that there is a Delhi beyond Pahargunge.... ha ha ha

A lot of people fly into Mumbai and leave the next day. I think it has to do with wherever you first land in India. It all just seems a bit too much and you need to move on. For example, I am really glad that I landed in Kolkata after Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai. I simply would not have been able to appreciate the city otherwise. And yes, today I have developed a deep respect for Delhi and really enjoy exploring the city.

sorry jyotirmoy to burst in on your delhi love fest.

i could care less for delhi. (that i have a bombay bias, i am not going to hide). and i can drag a bunch of my southern brethen who would share this view.

chennai could give a run for the money with the number of cultural events. in fact its probably much more if you count the december season.

so would bombay/mumbai.

Delhi is a wonderful place that I fully intend spending MORE time in.
As an introduction to India it can be tough on the newbie, especially if you stay in Paharganj but then, as I always say it's a baptism by fire and you'll get properly tuned up by staying in the main bazzar, pretty much anything you are likely to experience in India can be had on yout first couple of days on Paharganj.............Tha doesn't suit everybody of course!!

Again a wonderful place!!

why make a statement like this?

you are a traveller. some of us are locals. we just express our opinions. i have first cousins in delhi who disagree with me ..and share their distaste for bombay as much i do for their city. new york - dc, melbourne-sydney..similar to that and its there everywhere.

chennai has 100's of concerts in december alone.... i was just pointing out to jyotirmoy his statement on the most cultural events in no other city....other than delhi...

sorry captain for digressing from your thread.
