December is the 'Music Season' in Chennai.
There are about 30 venues offering mostly South Indian programmes. If you look hard enough you will find quite a few south-north and east-west fusion concerts too.

The rock fort temple in Tiruchi has contiouous Carnatic music recitals. Additionally, most of the showcase Tamil temples have Nagaswaram ensemble which plays during morning and evening ceremonies.

Infact the period from Oct to March/April is a good season to catch up live performances in all the major cities in India.
There are also special festivals in South and North India live Tanjore music Festival and the one mentioned above in Cal (or Kol).
Another good way to attend these concerts without paying much (or even nothing at all) is looking out for SPIC-Macay music festivals. Normaly held at universities, schools, and colleges all over, mainly for students but its easy to getin those organised in Universities. However sometimes its difficult to know when and where these are happening, if you are not looking reading the local newspaper. Just search for SPIC Macay in google and you'll get all the info related to this organisation.
cheers
Vinay

Dover Land Music Festival

Namaste,

I'm interested in attending this festival - any information on the dates and where to buy tickets would be gratefully recieved. Or even details of other festivals or events of hindustani of classic music performances in India.

Varanasi

I was in Varanasi for five months this spring/summer. In late March/early April there was a classical music festival (also dance) at the Sankat Mochan Temple. It lasted for about five days. Next years festival is, I believe, the first week of April. The music began each night around 7 and didn't stop until sunrise the following day. Some good musicians. On the last night I was falling asleep around 3 AM . . . then this voice started singing, woke me right up . . . it was Pandit Jasraj, one of the true vocal genius's of Indian classical music. During the season the whole town is very good for music. During the summer many of the best musicians head up to Dharamsala.
