Chennai Music Offerings Dec 2005

help!! how do I decide which music or dance performances to go see this month in chennai since i know next to nothing about carnatic music?? there are so many choices!!! I'm staying in mylapore, so I think I'll stick to the neighborhood, the Music Academy or the Brahma Gana Sabha. I like female vocals and flute, but, am pretty open... recommendations or guidence from someone who has a clue??

Oh dear... I have a clue, but there are still many great artists that I have never heard of, on account of them not having played in London, or made a CD I have heard. Not to mention the up and coming youngsters --- and you can hear some good music as part of an audience of three at some of the early concerts.

If you like flute don't miss Shashank.

You're also close to the halls in Luz, and the halls near to Kapaliswara temple. There are several.

If you have a chance to see O.S. Arun, don't miss him. KYM brought him in to play for us in September -- his is a mix of carnatic and hindustani music.

Another thought.

The 'star' artists will be performing in best timeslots. Traditionally this is the evening concert, but some sabbhas have now made it the second-to-last spot of the day it seems (people complain that they can't get home late). If you go and see those concerts you will be seeing people who are considered good.

Because you don't know what you're looking for, you might as well pick almost at random, or by seeing which is the nearest hall (Mylapore Fine Arts, Sastri Hall, Luz, Ragha Suda Hall, Luz.

I might go out concerting tonight, and if I do I think I'll see Hyderbad Brothers at Sivagami Petachi Auditorium, which is at the Alwarpet end of Luz Church Road. I don't know them, but I know their younger brother in London. The mridangist, U K Sivaraman is one of the greatest.

Got your number, I'll SMS you if I do go.
