IndiaMikers always come up with a solution .... Hobson-Jobson is a great resource too .... if only one knew how to use it properly.
Also from Hobson-Jobson - Dhooly or Doolie(hind doli) - "A covered litter. It consists of a cot or frame, suspended by the four corners froma bamboo pole, and is carried by two or four men. Doli is from dolna 'to swing'. As it is lighter and cheaper than a palankin it costs less both to buy or hire and to carry, and is used by the poorer classes." .... sounds similar if not a scaled down version of the jompon.

Peak and others, you'll be aware Hobson-Jobson is online? Might make it easier to search for keywords. (Even this edition takes some getting to grips with though. I believe there are other online editions.)
