Question Chalo ghar ko jaldi, jhampani!

Chalo ghar ko jaldi, jhampani! Go Home quickly Rickshaw Man!? a direct quote from Kipling's "The Story of Gadsby"!

It's the third time I've come across Jhampani in Kipling's short stories - is Jhampani a term that is still used today and how/what is the term derived from?

Jhampani here sounds like either the name of the Rickshaw man, or the name of the locality/town where 'home' is.

As far as I know jhampani does not mean anything.

Thanks Captain! Then as the definition (re: Human Rickshaw pullers)appears to dictate .... I gather these Jhampanis may well only exist in Calcutta these days?

Or perhaps he is referring to more of a covered litter/sedan chair/palanquin type carriage device?

The word "Sais" is still used in Bengali... the man in charge of the horse.
The word "jhamp" in Bengali means jump. I am not aware of the meaning/usage of the word Jhampani.

sounds like a palanquin to me.

jhampani.. the sound of it, plus kiplings area of operation.. my guess is that is a central-indian (MP, UP..) term.

Just took a quick glance through Hobson-Jobson. I get the feeling
that it may have been derived from the Javanese/Malay word SAMPAN - A kind of small boat or skiff which led me to CHAMPANA - A kind of small Vessel and thus JHAMPAN and JHAMPANI ?

Dunno, to a layman (me ) there seems to be some Sanskrit influence in Malaysia and Indonesia..

but sampan is derived from Chinese.. ; means 'a few planks', I think.. somebody told me in Shanghai.

Just discovered it hiding in Hobson-Jobson under 'jompon': "A kind of sedan or portable chair used by the ladies at the Hill Sanitoria of Upper India. It is carried by two pairs of men(who are called jomponnies i.e janpani or japani)each pair bearing on their shoulder a bar from which the chair are slung."

It goes on to say that 'Jhampan' in Bengali is a stage on which snake-catchers and other juggling vagabonds exhibit; A kind of sedan used by travelers in the Himalaya.
