Carnatic Classical Vocal Recital by Prof. Parassala B Ponnammal

I happened to see the carnatic vocal concert of the veteran singer Prof. Parassala B Ponnammal in Doordarsan National Program of Music on 12 September 2009, 8:30AM. Wonder how she is able to sing like this during this age (she has crossed 86). Heard lot about her and about her concerts in Chennai. I think she needs to be considered in the level of MS, DKP, and MLV. The concert was a 30 minutes program, but that was enough. Smt. Bhama provided vocal support. Avaneeswaram S R Vinu was on violin, Erickavu N Sunil was on Mridangam, and Trikkakkara Santharam was on Ganchira. All accompaniments were very good.

Let us wish her long life !

Hi Nick-H ... just thought of express my feeling after hearing her concert ... It was so great to listen to her ... i have posted my comments on her concert to some other forms too ..... i think she is not yet recognized at a level as we recognize MLV, DKP, MS, etc .... main reason would be she was in Kerala during major part of her musical career .... i think chennai has noted her after she crossed 70 ....

I believe that she found public recogniti0on after performing in the Trivandrum Navaratri mandapam. Possibly, even, she was also the first woman ever to do so.

There is just not enough interest on this forum in Carnatic music to make artist-level discussion worthwhile here. I'm sure you already know about www.rasikas.org --- you'll find many more takers there!
