Don't buy Disney DVD's - (Not Pirate ones) None of them work on UK DVD players. Some very disappointed grandchildren. Others DVD's work o.k.

We bought a DVD from Tesco's with us - and found they had the same one the same price in Candolim.

Thumbs down

I know someone who bought 6 brand new cds, all wrapped, unopened. They were blank!
New pcs here come with pirated XP operating system. Totally useless.

As far as possible stay clear from the cheap stuff sold on the beaches of Goa. I bought a CD of much hyped fusion music and to my dismay it didn't last even a re-run , correction - now the fusion music sounds like bells chiming in a deep well...

C/Ds are ok but dont bother with dvds or pc software as there is a very big chance that they will not be formatted to work on european pcs and games
We Found that out 2 years ago when we bought some stuff for the pc there

at you all, yeah its always a bit risky , but not much to lose eh.
Its nice too know theres some pc software around as a backup, just in case. I dont support Bill Gates continuing to be the richest man in the world, i'd rather see a corner trader make a few dollars.
Even in the UK street dvd's are often very bad quality , theres better ways.
I used to enjoy a restaurant movie over lunch in a laydown loungy like place in Thailand, after a the gym , nice , i love films , nice cheap entertainment.

I bought a couple of CDs in India - I avoided the guys on street corners and bought from a 'proper' shop, when I got home one of them wouldn't play and the other one played but delivered no audio whatsoever!
My advice is that you look at the actual disc in the shop and demand to hear it . . .
Please do not buy bootlegged music CDs - chances are the musicians involved are already being ripped off big time.
Johnny.

the op did not specifically say pirated, just cheap. but if he/she did mean pirated, than i second the initial response. As a musician i know all to well how the advent of digital music and piracy has hurt the recording industry and especially the musicians who are already the least paid within its employee network.
btw: if you want to buy cds and know that the money is going directly into the musician's hands, shop at cdbaby.com

One of the ways the big companies rip off the musicians is by perpetual re-issue of music in the new formats, as technology marches on. I understand that when you buy a 1960s or 70s album on CD, for instance, almost none of that goes to the musicians/composers.

On top of that is the fact that CDs are priced high in UK compared to many other countries. I understand that a lot of that stuff, genuine and original, is available here in India, for a lot less than it would be in England --- but then, that would be true of USA too, and I'm sure the selection would be huge there by comparison.

On the software front: consider the $1=£1 exchange rate that, traditionally, US software companies consider reasonable!

As far as I know, by the way, there is no difference in a data CD from one country to another: it cannot be formatted so that it does not work on a British PC. If it can't be read it is dud. I have no knowledge of games and their machines.

For the British, if it is a shopping trip for music and software that's wanted, I would suggest a trip to USA rather than India!

Composers are protected by copyright laws. If a record company wants to reissue music in a new format they must submit the list of songs to the MCPS (I think this stands for Mechanical Copyright Protection Service) which then issues a licence to the record company. Without this licence the record company cannot go to a company that presses the disc. MCPS will levy a charge on the record company based on the number of discs being pressed and on the number of tracks that are copyrighted. They will then distribute royalties from this money collected to the composers.

The original record company or musician will have agreed that their original tracks can be used and in doing so will receive a fee from the reissuing company. for example most of the old back catalogue of the Rolling Stones has been remastered and you can bet old Mick and Keith did let them do it without getting a cut!
