BOLLYWOOD! Your favourites.....
Does anyone else here like Bollywood movies? I have only seen 4 films, and I think:
Devdas was overrated, but ok. probably the best productuion values of any that I have seen. kahbi kushi kabhi gham (K3G) was excellent. Usual odd sappy story about a 'family torn apart' (in this instance because the son falls in love with a girl not of his strict father's choosing) but there was some acting and the storyline actually flowed ok. Lagaan is possibly the best sporting movie of all time (I'm really not into sporting movies, but Lagaan had a great story, and the only really odd singing/dancing scene was the bit with the white woman singing her love to the village boy with the red rose). Kushi was a pleasent piece of fluff I want to get K3G on DVD (ideally with subtitles), or at least get the soundtrack, because I really enjoy the music! What are your favourite Bollywood movies? Why do you like them? Alternatively, why do you hate all Bollywoon movies? |

Lagaan was great... who would have thought a three hour movie about cricket could be so good! I've got the soundtrack too. Have the Monsoon Wedding DVD. I saw Devdas for sale the other day on VCD here in Bangkok but the subtitles were in Thai, not English so I had to pass on that.

I liked Dil Chauta Hai because it was the first movie I saw once I got to India, and the girls I lived with taught me all the words and dances.
K3G was good. Hirtick and Shahruckh! I hated Ashoka and Raaz. Raaz was a remake of the American movie "What Lies Beneath," although the director claims it was not, and did nothing for me (except make me laugh). Bollywood movies are very hit and miss for me. I dislike going to the cinema in India because my grasp of Hindi isn't good enough for me to follow all the dialogue. When I see them subtitled on TV I dont mind them all that much at all ![]() Monsoon Wedding was fabulous, though I don't think it really counts as a Bollywood movie. Shannon |

we are watching Devdas in my conversational Hindi class. Fabulous production.
It used to be that the production quality of the movies in general from India was so poor as to obscure any other value. Now the cinematography, sound and digital quality are often superior to Hollywood. It's a breathtaking change for thos of us who've had to endure bollytunes screeching at 5 am down the lanes of Malgudi back a few years ago!

Sholay, Don, Charas, Monsoon Wedding, Mumbai Matinee, Salaam Bombay...
I prefer the early-mid 80's stuff with Mithun, Amitabh, Pran and the crew. Bill |

Have only seen two myself, Dil Chahta Hai and Lagaan...I bought these on ebay and there were many more for sale. Just do a broad search for 'movie india' it should have good results.

I am a huge fan of movies from India, old and new. I'm particularly fond of old Guru Dutt (a genius director) films...PYAASA in particular. Anyone here familiar with his work? Waheeda Rehman is luminous in his movies.
Some sixties movies are great fun, but hardly "art" films...my favorties are GUIDE and JEWEL THIEF. "Helen"'s dance number in JEWEL THIEF is a riot. An absolutely wonderful movie from the early 80's is UMRAO JAAN, a historical film about a courtesan. Terrific music. There are several films that could be considered outside the Bollywood mainstream that are well worth seeing. MANDI, for example, starring Shabana Azmi, or MIRCH MASALA. There are several excellent films starring her, and/or Naseerudin Shah, Om Puri, or Smita Patil which would be in the category of "art" films or sort of like the equivalent of an independent film with an emphasis on better acting or provocative subject matter. In contrast to this, I can get a huge kick out of films like COOLIE NO. 1 with Govinda. Pretty low-brow stuff, but the guy has such cheerful energy. Or maybe I get weird charge out of seeing a chubby guy dance in hindi production numbers!! When I was in India, the guides and drivers seemed genuinely surprised that I was familiar with hindi films and hindi film songs. Made for some great conversations. I could go on and on about hindi movies. I get them usually when I visit Chicago on Devon St. Lots of shops there that sell a huge variety. Would love to talk to anyone out there who is an equally rabid fan of these movies. |

PAKEEZA
The movie you're thinking of is called PAKEEZA, although there have been other hindi movies where the heroine has danced on broken glass...SHOLAY for example. It could be up there with various bollywood tradition/cliches like the heroine dancing in a wet sari.
