indiawise:

I have seen Monsoon Wedding (available in London) and loved it!!! I bought:

Devdas
Mission Kashmir

Kal Ho Naa Ho and Lagaan were also on my list but the guys in the Music World told me these were unavailable on DVDs

in addition I bought soundtracks from Khakee, Meenaxi and Paap (I already own soundtrack from Monsoon Wedding)

I can highly recommend the films of Guru Dutt from the 50's and 60's. An interesting director who managed to find a way between art and commercial cinema. Had turbulant personal life and has taken his own life at a fairly young age.

Loved Monsoon wedding of course. Was totally engaged by Lagaan - more like opera, easily identifiable types but you end up completely rooting for the good guys - a blast! When we were in India recently we went to see 'Khaki' in Jaipur, but had to leave at the intermission so we rented it this weekend from our local Indian grocery to see the 2nd half. What a deal, the tape was only $1 for unlimited time - the downside was he'd clearly taped it himself, it looked like a cross between Russian realist art from the 1930's and bad film noir. Still it was surprisingly subtle (apart from the parts where they inexplicably broke into song of course - even more puzzling they came in the middle of heavy duty action - everyone gets killed in the end). Nice twist though, a surprising moral ambiguity in the last scene. Two thumbs up.

Maybe the chain-stores don't sell the pirated copies
You should be able to get pirated KHNH etc from Palika, if nowhere else.

A request Guerik, ..Pleeeeease don't propagate Piracy.

India anyways is full of it...and with Dewang Mehta no-more, don't know who fight for this cause.

so far I have only listened to Khaki soundtrack (without having seen the movie) and can't have enough of the song called Mere Maula... would love to know the lyrics, translation and/or context

Bet you guys didn't know that the theme song to "Dil To Pagal Hai" was a huge hit here in Israel a few years ago... You can still hear it on the radio, and I even danced to it at a friend's wedding.

Mere Maula

guerik, thanks for the link! unfortunately there wasn't an English translation for my fav song that I was searching for. May be someone can help with the Hindi text below:

Mere Maula Karam Ho Karam Mere Maula Karam Ho Karam
Mere Maula Karam Ho Karam Mere Maula Karam Ho Karam
Tumse Fariyad Karte Hai Hum Tumse Fariyad Karte Hai Hum

Yeh Zameen Aur Yeh Aasman
Tere Kabze Mein Hai Do Jahan
Sab Pe Tu Hi To Hai Mehraban
Hum Tere Dares Jaye Kahan
Tu Hi Sunta Hai Sabki Sada
Tu Hi Rakhta Hai Sab Ka Karam
Mere Maula Karam Ho Karam
Mere Maula Karam Ho Karam
Karam Kijiye Maula Karam Kijiye Maula
Karam Kijiye Maula Karam Kijiye Maula
Bekaso Ko Sahara Mile
Doobto Ko Kinara Mile
Sar Se Toofan Pal Mein Tale
Jo Tera Ek Ishara Mile
Tu Kare Jo Meharbaniya
Door Ho Jaye Har Ek Gham

Mere Maula Karam Ho Karam Mere Maula Karam Ho Karam
Mere Maula Karam Ho Karam Mere Maula Karam Ho Karam
Jaye Kahan Jaye Tere Dar Ke Siwa Maula
Tasteen Kahan Bhayi Tere Ghar Ke Siwa Maula
Is Duniyan Pe Tere Karam Ka Saya Maula
Daman Kahan Felaoo Tere Dar Ke Siwa Maula
Maula Maula
Mere Maula Karam Ho Karam Mere Maula Karam Ho Karam
