thanks!! I am overwhelmed. I don't know what I like. I am just having last minute panic about leaving India

do the DVDs sold in India have English subtitles?

radz, I will probably like "old" movies (up to 1995 I would say). where is the best DVD choice in Delhi?

The ones you pick up in India may not have subtitles--be sure to check. Otherwise, Indian movies are widely available abroad and online--the international subtitled versions. Mala's is a great list of the movies that have made the biggest splash over the last few years.

Devdas is gorgeously filmed and well choreographed- recommended for newbies

Palika Bazaar is excellent for DVDs (I was referred there from Indiamike too )
There are a bunch of shops selling DVDs, you will be able to pick up some recent-release hollywood movies too if you want them (although the quality isn't very good at all). If you want to check that they have subtitles, they're pretty good about playing you the movie to show you.

I love Kal Ho Naa Ho too, it's very well made and easy to watch, even for non-bollywood fans.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is also a favourite of mine, and Khakee is good if you want a change from the usual love story - it's a bit of an action flick (although the love story element's still there..)
Also Munnabhai MBBS is a bit of a cute comedy.

My favorite out-and-out masala movie is "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" (aka DDLJ). It's the movie that made Shahrukh Khan a superstar, and has been playing in a theater in Bombay for something like 9 years. Great soundtrack. Fairly easy to find on DVD.

Watch movies by the following directors:
1. Gulzaar
2. Hrishikesh Mukherjee
3. Subhash Ghai
4. Prakash Mehra
5. Manmohan Desai
6. Rajkumar Santoshi
7. Ramgopal Verma

It does not mean that all the movies by the above are good, but most of them certainly are.

Avoid Palika Bazar , instead, try Music Shop, in Khan market, Planet M and Music World at Ansal palza..South extension market..they have many branches around Delhi.

Talking About Comedies

Good Indian Comedies have been:

Chashme Badoor
Gol Maal
Half Ticket
Jane Bhi do yaron

The above are the ones I can watch anytime

New comedies in last couple of years have been:

"Hera Pheri" is a good comedy and better is "Munna Bhai MBBS" which is actually a Patch Adams re-make but very well made for India.

Enjoy
Ashish

Buy DVDs if you want subtitles to the film's very few VCD's come with subtitles!!
Be aware that many DVD's have a region encryption code so unless you have a multi region DVD player you may have problems playing them!!!
I think you can get around this if you if you are using a PC to playback!!
Any techies care to comment on this!!!
Also I agree with all the above choices especially "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" I'm glad to hear that "Mother India" is such a good film as I have just purchased it, looking forward to watching it when I get home!!
