Bollywood Indie Films at Cannes Film Festival 2012

The Cannes Film Festival 2012 is opening tonight.

There is an article from the BBC concerning the films of Anurag Kashyap to be shown as part of the festival.

My heartiest wishes to Uday Sankar's 'Kalpana' (The Imagination). It's the only film directed by the legendary dance maestro, on his own dream and expectation, it's all about dance and some fantasy.

In the BBC article, it is said "There will be five Bollywood films screened at Cannes this year' [below the poster of Gangs of Wasseypur] but I got four names.... what's the fifth?

My guess is that they are counting 'Gangs' as two films because it will be shown in two parts.

There is ‘Miss Lovely’ which has been directed by Ashim Ahluwalia. Set in 1986 Mumbai, it`s the story of two brothers who make underground films (with titles such as Lady James Bond) for a small-town picture house. Cracks in their fraternal relationship appear with the arrival of a vulnerable young actress. This is screening in the "Un Certain Regard" section of the festival.

Then making an appearance in Critics` Week is the Hindi-language film ‘Peddlers’ by Vasan Bala, about three unusual characters whose paths cross in Mumbai. Note: Critics Week is independent of the official Cannes Film Festival

Next is Anurag Kashyap’s two part series ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’. The film is a tale of family vengeance, spanning three generations and runs for a testing five hours and 20 minutes. This is in Director's Fortnight, which is also independent of the offical Cannes Film Festival.

The fourth film is Uday Shakar’s 1948 film ‘Kalpana’. Restored by the World Cinema Foundation from a copy of the original negative preserved by the National Film Archive of India. The print was restored by the Cinematheque of Bologna and the Immagine Ritrovata laboratory. This will screen in the section of the festival "Cannes Classics - World Cinema Foundation".
