Bollywood in National Geo

A fantastic feature--photos by Bill Allard, one of the best, and text by Suketu Mehta, author of "Maximum City: Bombay Lost & Found" (which everyone on IndiaMike should read). There's also a great multimedia feature on the site with Allard. |

Maximum City is a great book
Thanks Merchant for recommending this book a couple months ago. You're right--it's a fantastic and soberingly powerful look at Bombay in the 21st century.
One warning to others: if you think India is all about Goa-trance culture and incense wafting over the Ganges, this book will quickly shatter your rose-colored glasses. It's a hard and often depressing read, but in the end is an incredibly rewarding picture of modern life in one of the biggest cities in the world. A side note to all IMers in New York: the book's author Suketu Mehta will be speaking at the New School at 7pm on February 16th. I can't find any info online about it but it's taking place at the main New School bldg on 12th St. |

Merchant, did you go listen to Suketu Mehta? I read his book a while back and enjoyed it, he seemed so much more down-to-earth than Shashi Tharoor. How do you keep track of these things in New York..Asia Society?? Some Indian organization?

That event at the New School was cancelled, but I saw him a few weeks later at a South Asian authors evening at CUNY, sponsored by the South Asian Journalists Association. I took pictures, which are supposed to be up on their site but aren't yet.
Yes, Suketu is very down-to-earth, soft spoken. Shashi was there, too, but with his St. Stephen's airs and United Nations posting, he seems more rarified. SAJA is good place to start looking for India related events in New York. I'm a member. You don't have to be South Asian or journalist to join. The events are well attended, and there's lots of good stuff going on. The Asia Society has some good things, too. |

Thanks, will look into SAJA so that I don't miss stuff in the future.Very off-topic but I have to say one last thing-why can't Shashi Tharoor drop his Raj "burra sahib" accent, gets on my nerves.
