Earthian, if you don't want to repeat songs which have already been posted you can use the "search this thread" option. We would definitely have no problem in listening to the gems again.

yes, see that you had posted it on page 14, though Dosti songs seem not to have been posted. Let us end the day thus....
I asked a composer to make an introduction song based on lively tunes such as this one ( but no copy) which we used as our signature caller tune in our mobiles when we started work in a new area. Quite close to where you are based, Aarosh.

i agree. we lived on the same road and belonged to the same club. i felt sad to hear he had died. i think he never quite got over his wife's death, let himself go.

There doesn't seem to be a film clip of this song on youtube so we'll have to make do with the still:

And the recital from Pyaasa:

Of course Pyaasa (1956) came before Light House* (1958), in which Sahir's poem was set to music by N. Datta and sung by Asha Bhonsle on Nutan.

*It's two words here with equal stress on both. This is a quirk of Indian Engliah.

BTW: In the 1950s chaiwallahs at railway stations started hawking their wares with peelo chai garam..m..m..m, peelo chai garam. This was the same time as when snake-charmers "forgot" all their traditional melodies and started playing:

Health warning for herpetophobes: this video contains live snakes a'squirming!

That was Kalyanji Virji Shah (of Kalyanji Anandji fame) playing the clavioline* - and so did "electronic" music make its way into Hindi cinema.

The mid fifties were truly the high point of Hindi film music.
Incidentally the music for both Jagriti and Nagin was composed by Hemant Kumar.

*invariably mispronounced by Vividh Bharati announcers as "clay violin"

this is such a good song from "dastak":

this film caused much controversy at the time. i couldn't see it because it was for adults only and at least in the 70s it was strictly forbidden for under 18s to watch an "A" film in the cinema. now it's on youtube, i wonder what the fuss was all about.

apparently rehana sultan, the lead actress of "dastak", is now living in penury, helped by a monthly cheque courtesy the film and tv actors association.

Luckily I was over 18 at the time. Rehana Sultan subsequently played opposite Anil Dhawan in Chetna and Anil Dhawan opposite Radha Saluja in Do Raaha. These were all "A" films. What was all the fuss about? Well, Seth Govind Das was an MP of the ruling party.

And the great one from Dastak, one of the Lata/Madan Mohan classics:

seth who??

if i remember correctly she did a first for an indian film actress - appeared nude in one of those films. the price she paid for that mistake was all subsequent roles offered to her required her to do a nude scene!

here's another famous song from "dastak":
