Bob Dylan/India

Just had a discussion with someone today over the "ring them bells" Bob Dylan song in "Oh Mercy" ... To me it is a sure sign that he has been to India especially the verses "Ring them bells ye heathen from the city that dreams" (varanasi?) ... "and the sun is going down upon the sacred cow..." etc.
My friend was rather skeptikal saying there is no evidence of Dylan ever travelling to India and attributed the lyrics to creativity's hazards...

I realize I may be slightly biased after just returning from India but was wondering if anyone has any lights on this...

I think it's probably not a direct reference. The great thing about Dylan songs is the way you can bring your own thoughts and experiences to them.

When I was in Bodhgaya, I walked past a little bookstore and heard The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan playing inside, and instantly I felt at home. Funny how music can do that to you.

that is certainly true

still.... "it's rush hour now on the wheel and the plow and the sun is agoing down on the sacred cow"...
not many countries you still see (cart)wheels, plows and sacred cows...
The whole song is full of reference to multicultural spiritual experiences versus the blindness and misguidedness of those who stand for the "fighting strong and they are breaking down the distance between right and wrong"...

well Dylan does get preachy at times... but there is something there that resonates...

Not by India... this one is a typical anthem of the anti-outsourcing brigade though

"Well, the job that you used to have,
They gave it to somebody down in El Salvador.
The unions are big business, friend,
And they're goin' out like a dinosaur.
They used to grow food in Kansas
Now they want to grow it on the moon and eat it raw.
I can see the day coming when even your home garden
Is gonna be against the law.

Well, it's sundown on the union
And what's made in the U.S.A.
Sure was a good idea
'Til greed got in the way."
