hi,
My personal favorite is "touching the void". Teaches you, thats its not over till it's over and yes the 2 essential words every mountaineer should live by "BE PREPARED!"

I liked this. Awesome documentary. Even though it was more on mountains and not mountaineering. Seven Years in Tibet wasn't all that great, I'd prefer the book.

Into thin air

Respect for the mountains and knowing you are at their mercy
It doesn't interest me what you do for a living.
I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare dream of meeting your heart's longing.

IMHO, it's pulp. Full masala!

'Touching the void' is my personal favourite as well. The book is even better! Then there are 'Alive' and '127 Hours'. In the Masala category there is The Eiger Sanction -- what more do you need with Clint Eastwood around.

Am also keen on watching Ray's Sikkim... just havent been able to source it as yet.

About the "Sikkim" documentary by Satyajit Ray, I had started a thread on that subject when I discovered the film on Youtube, so you can enjoy it here:

"The First Ascent"

It can be found on youtube in 10-11 parts. I liked it as this wasn't as glamorous as 'touching the void' and others - no one died..no one survived a fatal fall, etc...its simply about climbers in different places who are hooked on to the whole thing.

Best mountaineering movies

The german movie "northface" (nordwand) and touching the void should be the top two. I think Vertical limit is masala and 7 years in tibet is not a great movie from mountaineering perspective.

Check out about north face here
