Talking Belly dancing anyone???

This may, I am going to visit southern india for a few months. I will be spending most of my time in bangalore, but I am also planning on visiting goa and/or kerala.
Does anyone know if belly dancing lessons are offered in any of these regions?
I love to dance and enjoy it in many forms. Some favourites are jazz, hip-hop, breakdancing and salsa - all very popular here in canada. However I am yet to experiance any traditional indian dance. Although I am aware that there are many types, belly dancing is the only one I am familiar with. If there are any others that you would reccomend to learn, please let me know

Thanx

PS- is dancing common in nightclubs??

Never heard of belly dancing in india Well some of my arab freinds who come here for studies are great in it but an indian belly dance - never heard.

Unless you are refering to the hindi movie dances.. Which well does not form part of any specific school other than of hindi movies alone, dont know much about it.

And a big YES to dancing in nightclubs, but you may have trouble finding them. Lot of them in Chennai and Bangalore, but in other southern cities not too sure. Kochi, Trivandrum and Coimbatore has occassional dance parties for which you need to watch out for the advetisements in local dailies. Not too sure if there are daily discotheques there these days.

If you want belly dancing you are gonna have to cancel your India trip and go to the UK and take a package holiday to Tunisia. There you can belly dance your nights away!

For a few dinars they will give you a photo of you embarassing yourself too (I know I have got one somewhere!)

Seriously you will find India a great place to look into the performing arts including dance but do not expect much in the way of belly dancing!

(unless soemone wants to correct me)

BUT...
P.S. Belly dancers love the jewelery and scarves they can get in India!
P.S.S. Finding belly dancing in India is almost as hard as finding Argentine tango.

Now with Belly dancing behind us, I would suggest some high end fusion of traditional dance plus martial arts at the below link. The academy is in Trivandrum but meant only for the high end dance enthusiast ( I know Daksha and she would not waste her time unless you are a die hard dance admirer)

www.dakshasheth.com

If interested in the traditional dances of India and as you are heading to Bangalore, you should visit the Nrityagram - run by one of the most famous Indian danseuse Protima Bedi. Its about 30 km from the city but lot of info about them in the web so you should get them easily in google.

http://www.nrityagram.org/

If that link is not working, try the below for more on the place.

http://www.indoindians.com/nrityagram.htm

Off the topic, being in bangalore as a fahion student, you should also visit the National Institute of Fashion Technology near Sarjapur Road. Supposedly the best fashion school in South india.

oh well, thanx for the update, you are all very helpful. I suppose I'll be taking some lessons here in vancouver instead.
And I didnt expect such a quick response!

Thanx sudheer, I will most definately be visiting Nrityagram; it looks amazing from what I can tell from the website!

oh fashion design!! I dont even know where to begin my questions on the textile industry in india.
But for sure, the National Institute of Fashion Technology will be at the top of the list of places to visit. It will be interesting to see how different our schools are. Sudheer, since you live in bangalore, can you think of any other places off the top of your head that I could visit? Any textile manufactures in the area?? Or places to buy fabric?? I've already been doing some research but it's better to hear from someone who actually lives there. My dad just recently moved to bangalore but he hasnt had time to check things out for me.

THANX AGAIN!

There are fabric mills everywhere, but for me, the best fabrics in India are the handicraft fabrics. There are centers for this everywhere, depending on what you are looking for, and it's mostly cottage industry. Wonderful ikats in Tamil Nadu, Andhra, Gujerat and Orissa. Tie dying and mirror work in Rajasthan and Gujerat. Etc.

There's also an incredible shawl weaving industry in the Kullu area; these shawls were very trendy when I was there last winter, and such soft lambswool! I bought some at the HP Emporium in Delhi.

Bangalore and textile news

Me again....

There are a fair number of big name textile houses in Bangalore but the factories are all a little detour outside of the city. Visits are normally controlled as working conditions is something that they think all western visitors would go and publish in media back home. You can think of a basic visit to MG road and Commercial street for seeing the range. Then later some more discreet places like chikpet where you should go with some local freinds or student you may befreind at NIFT. You can see a wide range of textiles and even buy some for use later in your days ( as I am sure you will have assignments towards end of your studies)

Let me know when you are reaching Bangalore, I can check the class timings of NIFT as I have someone "close" studying there

Anything else on Bangalore, you need to know shout out and I shall be of help. By the way, I am travelling from coming friday and will disappear for 2 weeks so you better come back soon with your questions :P

It's one of the night joints in Bombay. There are many out there which can blush even a belly dancer. Admission is free. But you need to buy first beer at a high price. That is the ticket!

When in doubt remember the slogan - "Everything is possible in India"
