Being Cyrus

This is the new English-language Indian film released last week making quite a few waves. I saw it a few days ago and enjoyed it enormously; in fact it's probably the best film I have seen in the last year or so.

The movie starts off as a dysfunctional family/ ethnic comedy about a Parsi family but turns into something darker in its second half. In broad concept it's similar to Coen Brothers films like Barton Fink and Intolerable Cruelty but IMO better executed than either. The comedy is a touch broad at times but always entertaining especially the hilariously over-the-top confrontation between the villainous brother played by Boman Irani and a dog-owner. Saif Ali Khan is very impressive as the inscrutable protagonist; you especially appreciate his performance by the time the movie ends. The cinematography is excellent with many beautifully composed shots (I believe the director Homi Adajania is a photographer).

Anyone else seen it?

The Best Indian Film I have seen in last six months is 15 Park Avenue.

I have not seen Being Cyrus yet.

15 Park Avenue is a genuine thinking film unlike some others.

I Agree with you, Pariscope!

Its one of the best Indian film I have seen in a long time, hilarious at times, capture your attention all the time without a single slack and at the last ticks your grey cells too!
The camera work is also good, it did a good job of narrating story without attracting undue attention to itself.
I was fascinated by another fact of the movie, the sound. The surround sound was above average than the usual hindi movies. Specially, the sound of pigeon/dove flying in the backgound (I can't recall the scene, sorry). The sound moves in circular pattern covering all corners of the hall over and over again.
We are coming of age, I guess, where film-making becomes work of art again.
Amen!

Being Cyrus truely is a refreshing movie as compared to the usual ones one see's. The best part it is from INDIA.

As the movies do not have any songs within it. But lately the radio is playing a soundtrack Titles DREAMS. This soundtrack has Safi Ali Khan saying few of the dialogs of the movie like a Poem. Its awesome.. love to get my hands on it. A must hear

Cheers

I saw Being Cyrus last day I spent in Delhi before my flight to New York. I did not find the movie to be that good. It's ok.

Any news on when the DVD is going to be released? Amazon UK lists May 22 and hopefully it's released in India at the same time.

I am not particularly impressed with the cover and there is no information on Amazon about special features but I am still looking forward to the DVD.

I haven't seen "Being Cyrus" so far, but am anticipating it quite a bit as I have read and heard good things about it.
I cannot keep quiet though when Barton Fink is marked not well executed. In my opinion this is one of the few movies that has it all: fantastic cast, great story, abundance of symbols, passion etc. John Turturro has made an outstanding performance, he slipped into the role of the author so effortless.

Okay, you can get back to the topic of this thread now .

I saw being Cyrus about two weeks ago. It's alright, not great, as PassingBy mentioned. The best thing about the movie is Boman Irani and his frustrated character. Boman Irani is the quintessential frutrated Indian actor in my opinion. The movie was a bit 'out there' but it's a step in the right direction. *End review in a lame joke* Overall, Being Cyrus was a tad boring... I'd rather be myself. *Slaps forehead* God that was awful!
