Thumbs up sawai gandharva

I dont understand anything of Indian classical music. But attended Sawai Gandharva just once out of curiosity and I realised that it is divine. You need not know the technicalities to feel it. Its like "GOD". Pt. Jasraj is one arrogant God. Pt. Bhimsen Joshi....GOD, Malini Rajurkar...GOD.
No wonder you feel like you are in heaven.

my husband and I managed to see Ali Akhbar Khan at Dover Lane Music Festival in Calcutta in early 2006. It was an amazing experience. I felt like I was in a trance. and I only felt that way in Goa trance parties. but that is another experience altogether since I really loved those parties once upon a time..

they say that the Indian classical music has its origins in the Indian sacred ancient rituals. I can definitely understand that. When you listen to it live, it wakes up every nerve in the system.

He most certainly is! He is the current star in a long line of important sitar players that have been very influential n instrumental classical music.
He also plas some lighter usci and sings - He is part of the ind0o-iranian fusion group Ghazal whcih is really a partnership with Kayan Kalhor which I'm rather keen on!

Has anyone heard of O.S. Arun? Last year the school brought him in for a concert for us one night. His music was an interesting mix of Hindustani and Carnatic.

yes, DD, you are right about OS Arun! I liked his singing style, tho, very emotional (at least in this concert....)

I'm not so keen on the singers who think it is a dance recital!

But some of them, like TN Krishna, i just close my eyes to the gestures, because the voice is so good

you ARE a grumpy old man, I swear. word for word, that's precisely what the elders say when they see a singer being flamboyant or extravagant with his gestures.

Sing, dammit, not dance.

to reach higher octaves, sing in high octaves or give continuity and what not...carnatic and hindustani vocalists will do all kinds of gestures, hand movements ~ many people joke atleast in carnatic that they are grinding dosa/idli dough with their hands ....and some of the musicians are known for their mannerisms~

not everyone likes or can understand the vocals in carnatic and hindustani genre~ if music itself is an acquired taste..then these genre's (not the instrumentalists in these genres)..you multiply exponentially for that taste to develop

some carnatic fans cant stand hindustani vocalists...say its too slow, mellow and just sounds like wailing ~ both genres have influences on each other~ carnatic music is 98% devotional music..in telugu, sanskrit, tamil, malayalam, kanada~ and some in hindi, marathi etc~ remained more pure they say than hindustani music which is predominantly hindi and urdu had considerable islamic influences fromt the mughal invasion.

it takes a while to appreciate and requires considerable immersion in both music genres especially in vocal concerts unlike the counterpart in instrumentalists concerts for these genres~ . these genre's both are very elaborate, a lot of mathematics involved in beats, pitch etc.

for the vocalists..you have to close your eyes and let the singer take you on a journey~ take you along with him/her. if you get distracted in the hands gestures or whats around ya..then a lot of it is lost. carnatic music concerts feature a main piece which is about an hour in length in between...where there is considerable exploration and elaboration on a piece. the vocalist also sing many other pieces to start with it and end with~ in hindustanic music concerts..there is one main piece and some smaller pieces in the end!

Me too.
It was my 3rd Vaidyanathan concert. His rythm and style are truly exceptional. Missed the first half hour in traffic though.

I think there is a Viswa mohan Bhatt and a Veena player concert @ Chowdaiyah memorial hall on next saturday i.e. 27 may.
For tickets call 41205890/41203588/56950046.
