Been to a live Indian concert/recital lately? Pls share your experience
I was looking around for a "live" music post (general), but couldn't find one..so I started one.
I went to the most amazing Ghazal concert tonight hosted by the local Rotary Club. The singers mostly sang in Urdu, and a little Marathi at the end - as they were originally from Nagpur, M. I could hardly understand the meaning of the words, but I had goosebumps all over from the music. Time stopped! It was truly euphoric! The music was emotional and beautiful...and if I may say..passionate. I really believe music is a universal language! Have you ever been to a live (Indian music) concert in India? Carnatic, Hindustani, Ghazal, Film, Folk, etc.? Where? When? What was your experience?

Not in India, but was lucky enough to get tickets for Ravi Shankar's 85th Birthday concert with his daughter Anoushka at Birmingham's Symphony Hall, UK.
Out of this world, goosebumps don't cover it!!!! |

She was amazing (I feel bad saying it, but better than the main attraction - he's getting on...) and the evening was topped off by the fact that as we were eating our post concert meal at a restaurant opposite the Hall, in walked the whole band (except Daddy) - and we got to meet them & they were really nice.
Fantastic evening, well worth the trip. Very tempting to head off to WOMAD. |

I'm going to hear a band called FunkiDesi, a mix of Indian and African music -- funky, hip, world music.
but I just missed a kirtan by Krishna Das, WAAAAH!

Ghazals are very passionate: you certainly can say that!
A bit too much wailing for my taste, though. I like Hindustani classical music, but my real favourite is South Indian (Carnatic) classical. |

What City??
Mumbai has a lot of live performances during the winter.... Pune too.
I hear Bangalore and Chennai are pretty rich on this account, tho i don't have first hand experience...

Chennai has concerts almost every day of the year, often several.
During the "Season" (mid-December to mid-Jan) there are thousands of concerts, some of the many venues having three or more each day. |

Wow! Great responses and experiences! Thanks for sharing
![]() I've never been to a WOMAD event, but that's one I'll have to check off the list of things to do! Just checked out their website, http://www.womad.org MMike, how lucky for you that you're already there ![]() Quote:
That's so cool that you got to meet up after the concert. It definitely makes it even more special.Quote:
They're so poetic....well..i think they're derived from poems anyhow..Carnatic? I love that too. I took lessons when I was younger. Which carnatic concerts have you been to? Who do you like? M.S. Subbulakshmi was/is such a classic, and one of my favorites! You're in the town of the famed Kalakshetra! ![]() Hindustani is awesome too! My aunt and I will be getting our Hindustani lessons soon! YEH!!!! AvidTrekker, what types of music are played in Mumbai/Pune? Just curious... Those annual Dec./Jan. music and dance concerts in Chennai are part of Margazhi Festival. The Margazhi masam (month of mid-Dec to mid-Jan) is auspicious and sacred for Hindus, especially Tamilians. I missed it this past Jan, but I was tuned in to the "live" productions on one of the Tamil channels (Jaya TV i think it was?!). cyberhippie, nothing like flute that makes you want to close your eyes and float in air! Can you tell me more about the artist? Quote:

In winter, its not possible to attend all the concerts... so one selects and selects.... I recall some two months ago, there was a 15 day festival at Shanmukhananda Hall in memory of the late Kanchi Shankaracharya Chandrashekharendra Saraswati. The entire Who's Who of Carnatic music performed, plus a few from the Hindustani genre. |

eeeks i cant stand balamurali krishna~ but tn seshagopalan, sanjay subramanium and tm krishna are awesome~ on the women, sudha raghunathan is one of the best currently. i had to chance to see here in shanmukhananda recently as she sang for the shankaracharya. he sat on the stage for about an hour in the kutcheri before he left. she was fantastic.
bilahari, ananda bhairavi, hamir kalyani, kharaharapriya, chakravakam, vasantha, devagandhari are some of my favorite ragams. jasmine flowers, colorful silk sarees, standard 5 or 7 diamond ear studs, nose studs mami's gossip pre kutcheri, taalam [beats] noises by everybody in the auditorium, eating upma or bonda hot pre concert, watching folks usually men run en mass out for the toilet during talavadhyam time are all part of the kutcheri experiences i relish. dont get these in hindustani concerts ![]() ajoy chakraborthy, pandit jasraj, veena sahasarabudde and sanjeev abhyankar are my picks in this genre~ listening to a raag malhar piece takes to you to the seat in the landscape...veenatai makes you feel the clouds and the rain, the verdant greenery~ a must! rags ahir bhairav, gorakh kalyan and bairagi are my fav's instrumentalists for carnatic..i will have to go with u srinivas [mandolin], l subramanium [violin], his brother l shankar [double violin] and the late doreswamy iyengar [veena]. ganesh-kumaresh [violin] are good as well. concerts with L Subramanium are an absolute bliss! instrumentalists to watch out in hindustani would be usually in jugalbandis would be pandit zakir hussain [tabla] with shiv kumar sharma [santoor], chaurasia [flute] of course and buddhaditya mukherjee [sitar] along with his son. if you are really interested in attending music festivals, here are some that non-misses....
here are some links to websites~ Carnatica Kutcheri Buzz Sangeetham-Unavailable right now but watch out Carnatic Corner here's a really good book for carnatic afficiandos~ Carnatic Summer : Lives of Twenty Great Exponents |
