Jean-Pierre (if I can call you that - I know a great bansuri guru in Varanasi. I started with him for five months in '99-'00, then for another three months in '06. His name is Sohan Lal, and he can be located through a music store called The Music Melody House, located in the Asi (southern part) area of Varanasi.

He comes from nine generations of musicians, and is also an amazing shehnai (his first instrument) player.

Just looked at your post again, in August Sohan Lal may be (as many teachers are) in Dharamsala for the monsoon. Varanasi is a little empty during monsoon, with many travelers heading for the hills, to escape the rain and humidity.

I took Sohan Lal into the studio while in Varanasi last time, and we recorded both shehnai and bansuri, the music I used for a film I made.

Cold won't start until late November or December, and will remain til mid-January.

If you can locate Sohan Lal, I recommend him highly.

hey rampal,

August is the tail end of monsoons in north India.
And it starts getting cold in november.

If you're in Delhi, you can learn bansuri from Rohit Anand.
Let me know if you need his phone number.
I've been learning from him since the past 3 years and found him to be a wonderful teacher.

hey dharma,

I shall be in Banaras in the first week of May.
Is it possible to visit Sohan Lal ji during that time?

Would like to pay my respects to him and seek his blessings.
