Anyone shipped out books from India?

Hello guys

A long time ago I think I read somewhere on this site that some people who visited India and were also book lovers had bought large quantities of books in India and had them shipped out from India to their home addresses. I can't find the original post though.

Does anybody here have experience with this? Is it reliable and would it cost a lot to ship a few boxes from India to Europe by air? I think shipping by sea would just take way too long and wouldn't be worth it.

Hi Marvel,

I work for a publishing house in New Delhi and as I understand, yes, you are correct that air courier is a bit too costly and Shipping requires some documentation. If you wish I can provide you with the contact number of a person at AFL (logistics company)who manages our accounts.

You could check with him, if you like.

Hi Neeti

Thanks for the info and yes I would appreciate it if you could send me the account manager's number. I'll be in Mumbai for 2 weeks from the 22nd of July and I'm just trying to get an idea of how I could ship books from Mumbai to Holland.

Would you yourself happen to have any idea roughly how much air courier to Europe from India would cost?

Hey,

My dad shipped large quantities of books from India to me in Australia and it costed him about I think Rs 5000 for 20-25 kgs using DHL. Well it was something like that. But these were IT books I had bought over the 6-7 years in India from various odd places.

Hi Gautam

Did your dad ship the books to you via air or sea?

HI Marvel,

Surprisingly and interestingly, I work for Springer (Former KLuwer) which is Dordrecht based. The AFL, account manager is Mr. Vinay - 09873558677.
Call him and he will let you have rates for both sea and air frieght.

By the way, are the books from India of Indian origin ? Just asking?

Air I guess because it came fairly quickly. And yes except for 2-3 books others all were for sale only in the subcontinent at 10 times lower prices than here

Is that the same as Springer-Verlag? I know both Springer and Kluwer. That's really cool because they publish some good books and I had no idea that they had a branch in India. Many thanks for the number and I will give him a call one of these days.

Well I plan to buy some Indian origin books for sure (Purans, full Mahabharata etc.) but also as many technical books as I can (IT, robotics, science) which could be of non-Indian origin. Any specific reason for asking? Do I need to be worried about piracy?

Thanks again Neeti!

The cheapest option would be to send them by Book Post from a local Post Office. The package is sent by sea and the service is quite reliable, but it does take a long time.

A friend recently shipped books from Cochin, Chennai and Delhi to Jerusalem, took a good 3-4 months to get there.

That is really good news man. 5 grand rupees is nothing. Thank you very much for the info. Very helpful!

That would be a problem for me since any programming books I buy would be outdated by the time I received them.

I sent some 6 to 10 kg by sea mail from Mussoorie to my home in Sweden. Ca. Rs. 1100. Took a couple of months, but no problem other than that almost no stamps were still on the parcel.

Another parcel, same weight, Speed post from Mussoorie. Ca. Rs. 2000, but took only a few days. All stamps intact.

The bulk of my buying was sent directly from the Motilal Banarsidass outlet in Delhi. They kindly included several books I had bought in other places. For some 40-50 kgs of books (arrived, finally, safely in two sacks) they charged in all no more than Rs. 3931.50, including packaging and handling.
