A tribute to Dr.Rajkumar

Fellow IM'rs

I hope you all join me in paying tributes to Dr.RajKumar whose demise has came as shock to Bangalore and entire Karnataka.

He is perhaps the last Superstar in India who could command such a fan following that was witnessed yesterday and today. He came from astonishingly humble background and rose to tremendous heights. His was a typical rags to riches story.

Like many, I was greatly fond of his movies during my childhood / school days. RajKumar's movies were clean and pure family entertainers without vulgar dialogues or scenes. His movies typically ended with some moral message. He was most graceful in mythological roles. He represented the aspirations of Kannadigas and championed Kannada's cause. It would be very difficult for non-Kannadigas to understand what actually ticked the crowds today who indulged in unfortunate violence.

He is perhaps the only star in South India who could sing, and sing so well. He was the playback singer for most of his movies. He had good physique and he kept it well in shape with Yoga. When he acted in his last movie, he still acted as a Hero, not as Hero's father! He was 71 then. (His last heroine was Jayaprada)

My respect to him is for the fact that he confined himself to art and never tried to encash his popularity in politics (unlike his counterparts in other states in South India). And thank god he did so!

Dr.Raj (1928 - 2006), RIP.
