Books by John Masters. it's been decadessince I read them, but a few I recall as being good reads are "Far, Far the Mountain Peak" " Bhowani Junction"
"The Deceivers" "Nightrunners of Bengal"
Some of the events, from viewpoint of generations of British officers family, include Sepoy Mutiny, thuggee , Partition.

And novels of Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. "Sister of My Heart" "Arranged Marriage" etc. Wonderful reads!

OK, I will admit I haven't been through the whole thread, sorry.

Has anyone read "Being Indian: Inside the Real India" by Pavan K Varma? I've just ordered it. Got good reviews on Amazon UK. Here's (some of) the blurb:

Quote:
Pavan Varma turns a sharply observant gaze on his fellow countrymen to examine what really makes Indians tick. How, for example, does the indifference of most middle-class Indians to the suffering of the poor square with their enthusiasm for parliamentary democracy? How can a people who so supported Mahatma Gandhi's strategy of non-violence during the struggle for independence burn young brides for their dowries and beat domestic servants near-death? Why do Indians have a reputation for being spiritual and 'other-worldly' when their traditions so exalt the pursuit of material well-being as a principal goal of life? Drawing on sources as diverse as ancient Sanskrit treatise and Bollywood lyrics, Pavan Varma creates a vivid and compelling portrait of India and its people. "Being Indian" is an essential book for anyone who wishes to understand Indians, and for Indians who wish to understand themselves.

I also ordered "If you don't know me by now" by Sarthnam Sanghera. Mostly of interest to Brits I reckon, it's about a boy from a Punjabi Sikh family growing up in Wolverhampton.

Dervla Murphy's "Full Tilt", anyone? Kind of beat generation Irish woman goes hippy (1963-4). She cycled alone from Dublin to - well, she aimed for Delhi - can't actually remember if she got there as it's a while since I read it. The title says it all.

Jason Elliot's "An Unexpected Light" - his travels in Afghanistan. Wow. Wazen's thread here reminded me a bit of this (but with added machine guns).

Both describe a solitary outsider's head-on collision with different worlds.
