A listing of music festivals held throughout India
The post today in regards to the music festival currently being held in Bangalore reminded me that I've been meaning to ask about other music festivals (both large and small) held in India throughout the year. The only other that I know of is held in Hampi, in October or November. Where else can I see a nice selection of classical Indian musicians? I was hoping this thread might serve as a general listing that could continually be updated and revised for travelers to India that are interested in music. Thanks so much!

The Big One..
Chennai's Music 'Season'. Nominally from Mid-December to Mid January, there are thousands of events, mostly Carnatic (Southern Indian) Classical music, in dozens of venues. As the Music Season dies away, the Dance Season hots up.

Mahabalipuram, down the road, has a dance festival too.
Have a feeling that may be around December? Anyone? |

Unfortunately, a lot of music 'festivals' are only advertised last minute in the newspapers.
But the ones I have been to, and liked...dunno if they are there in CH's links.... Delhi Bhakti Music , Nehru Park, April Sufi Music, Qutab, September the weekly sufi music/quawwalis at Nizamuddin Mumbai: dunno dates for the college. Sangat Music Festival, organised by the Tatas, Dec every year. St Xavier's college annual Jazz festival (ok, not 'Indian' but worth mentioning) same college, Indian classical music, annual Chennai... nick has already mentioned this. and one I would like to hear, if ever I get back to Varanasi: The Sankat Mochan Music Festival: April... very prominent people play here voluntarily. |
