A good movie, anyone?

I'm on a rant tonight.
I'm so sick of bringing home awful Indian movies from the library. Tonight it was Rang de Basanti. I made it through the first hour. Another movie I didn't like was Dil Vil Pyar Vyar, which was just boring.

In two weeks we'll be in India and I want to go to the cinema and have a good time at a film with a variety of styles - some comedy, some romance, some action - and real filmi numbers, not songs played as background music. Movies I've liked in the past have been Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Devdas, Kisna, Koi... Mil Gaya. And I've liked all the old films, like Sholay. Man, I would love to see a movie with a really big production number (or three).

I've been to Planet Bollywood and read their reviews. God, they love the art films. Krrish looks good. But does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

I watched Taxi No 9211 yesterday. This was my first Hindi movie since Rang De Basanti. Before RDB, the last one I saw was a dud called Mangal Pandey: The Rising Before that was Lakshya. All this crossover pehnomena is humbug. The movies seem neither here nor there these days. Slick production values have not improved basic story telling. All movies seem to be similar and fizzle out after 20 minutes.

Anyway, Taxi 9211 seemed OK unless I discover that it was yet another "free-make" of a Hollywood feature. For the first time, Nana Patekar played the character of a loser in his career and spared us of his maniac mannersims. John Abraham was good too. This is a movie you might like in parts. I could sit through it and enjoy it in parts. So I think you would.

How about Dil Chahta Hai? It's a decent coming-to-age film. I also enjoyed the movie Yuva, which is kind of like Pulp Fiction where all the 3 stories come together.

If you liked Devdas, then you might like Parineeta with saif ali khan.

But then again I liked Rang de basanti and Mangal Pandey... and I also liked Faana.

Dil Chahta Hai,was good, and for me on the same disc as Laagan great acting,Aamir rocks want to know much more about cricket.very very good movie .even my in-laws got sucked into the movie.

Waqt 2005 is very flashy a kinda all in one movie.you just cannot get good help anymore.
Veer-Zaara awsome.just awesome.
Munnabhai is goofy but I did laugh,it helped me drop the tension.

why dont ya watch some Rajnikhant tamil flicks from the south? They are hilarious and the action sequences are to die for.

Pushpak ( a silent movie) with Kamal Hassan is good...liked Rangeela, thought urmila was dashing... Ram lakhan, Tezaab, Parinda...with Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Madhuri Dixit..were all fun.

so how did IMers find Lage Raho Munnabhai??? just wondering...
i really liked it.......because it took me back to Mumbai for those 100 or so minutes.... i loved that...Marine Drive and alll aaah!! Mumbai!!!!

I was kinda impressed by the way the concept of Gandhigiri has been handled and put forth. At times i felt like these dialogs about Gandhiji wud attract a lot criticism and opposition but then it ends up well.

btw is that story told by 'Bapuji' to Munna true? it is about 4 year old Gandhiji stealing something but then not withstanding the guilt he finally confesses to his dad.... am not sure about if its at all true. just curious...

a class of its own scene I must mention is the way how that govt. servant at the GPO was straightened up by embarrassing him upfront.

Gandhigiri ki Jai!

o wow!!! i knew that wud gather many ppl...specially the youth here (including amyl of course) saw one orkut community as well...cool!!!

well not sure to what level and till how long did Range De Basanti had an impact on the minds of the youth here, but I feel this Gandhigiri will really take roots. And as it is difficult by its nature ...its not going to be an easy path to take in such a corrupt Indian system....i think we will get to see some stories happening in reality...lets see.

apart from that idealogy... that movie just rocked.... i was the loudest bursting into laughter in the cinema hall clapping and all, at the way Sanju baba gives an explanation on giving a nice *** to that guard, infront of that builders mansion........something like "Bapu did not tell me what to do when you get slapped even on the second cheek"
o man!! that was one of the best scenes!!! really loved it! no wonder am going to watch that movie again...

Look, I said it will take roots....Indeed, non-violence is THE way to go.......I saw ppl getting inspired by Rang De Basanti but in their excitement they might not know the consequences..that I am sure are always not good for anyone. But you take Gandhigiri as a weapon, you are fighting with clean hands without making anyone suffer for your stand......but yea it takes time to give results...its like Ayurveda i guess....slow but efficacious!!!

Gandhigiri: No Blood but the Cleanest way to put things on track...

hmmm.....Lage Raho MunnaBhai!!!!!!! Gandhigiri Works!!!!

Here is an incident I came across (I wont be surpirsed if someone comes and says it's fake. ppl tend not to believe in good things readily )

anyway...

Quote:
I have an interesting incident to recount. It happened last week, on
Saturday. My wife Jayashree, my mother and I, were on our way to our native
place, Davangere. We boarded the Chalukya Express in the morning at
Yeshwantpur in Bangalore. All was well until we reached Tumkur.

At Tumkur, two middle-aged men boarded the train and sat beside me.
Probably they were relatives who were meeting after a long time. From their
talk it looked like they were the right hand of some political guy; they
were so engrossed in political talk.

They were deliberately talking loudly so that the other passengers in the
compartment would know that they were influential guys. I was getting
irritated listening to them. Then they bought some groundnuts and continued
with their talk. I turned on my MP3 player and dozed off; I could bear to
hear their talk anymore.

I woke up 45 minutes later, and found, to my horror, that the entire
compartment was littered with groundnut shells.

Both of them had thrown the shells in the compartment unmindful of the
other passengers' feelings. Besides no one had even complained. I was
furious. I wanted to confront them. But I knew that they wouldn't bother
about me.

At that very moment, Munnabhai and his Gandhigiri flashed in my mind. I
thought, why shouldn't I try it...! But I wanted some support. I told my
wife who readily agreed to support me. So the two of us, armed with old
papers and covers, started to clean the compartment....! The two men were
taken aback.

One of them wanted to know what we were doing. I said, ?We are cleaning the
compartment because we, and the passengers who will board after us, will
not want to sit in the garbage....?

The two guys were really surprised.

One of them said, ?Why don't you just push all this under the seat. I said,
?No, we can't?.

I continued with my cleaning. The other guy was ashamed. He apologised for
what he had done!

When we finished our cleaning we went back to our seats.

We pretended as though nothing had happened. Both these guys then fell
silent for the rest of the journey!

Friends, believe me, Gandhigiri works!

Try it.

This way maybe we can bring in a lot of change.

It is discussed in MG's autobiography. So it is true.
