Great article, thanks. I saw Dalrymple recently in New York - if his book tour takes him near where you are, I highly recommend his "reading" - he does a lot better than just reading, he shows slides and talks - he's a really alive and passionate presenter of his scholarship.

Interesting article.

I still think City of Djinns and In Xanadu are his best...

I wish the BBC would release his City of Djinns program on DVD. I've heard it's really good and I'm dying to see it.

Dzibead, I saw that before I read the book. Excellent programme, and (I have said this before) haunting music too... Michael Brooks and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

Sometimes publishers put out fancy illustrated editions of books that sell really well. Jon Krakauer's Into This Air is a good example (and Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code is a bad example ) If I can't get a DVD, I'd love to see a larger (or larger) format edition of The City of Djinns with good photos of all the buildings and archaeological sites he talks about, along with copies of some of the old prints and Mughal paintings he discusses ... what the havelis in Chandi Chowk looked like "before" and "after" ... and maps! Maybe I'll drop a line to the publisher ...

Must be for commercial purchase or purchase by an "educational institution" (e.g., an American "public television" station)! Surely not for the home viewing market!

Talking

I've got the "Doubting Thomas" and "City of Djinns" programs that I taped when it ran on Discovery Channel - I'll knock a copy off for $100.00 (plus shipping ) for anybody that's interested.

A play based on the experiences of the author is being staged in Delhi.
My suggestion is get a copy of this book and a ticket to Delhi. Enter Feroze Shah Kotla, a deserted fort in ruins with a great lawn inside. Sprawl and read a chapter. Pull yourself up and walk to see these places described in the book. Find yourself on the ramparts of Red Fort at the spot where the last Mughal had stood & watched the dust raised by the horsemen on the other side of the Yamuna.

i love city of djinns but didnt know that there was a tv programme of it...that i would love to see.

I'm not sure if it will affect this or not, but there was an article in the news recently about how the bbc want to put a large amount of their archives online for all to see. What a resource that will make!!

I've read "Last Mughal" and loved it. Much better than "White Mughal" which I didn;t finish. LM is a more scolarly work than City of Djinns, which, although charming to read is definitely NOT a scolarly work. LM breaks new ground in that the author utilized mountains of heretofore untapped documents to reconstruct the events of 1857 as seen by the citizens of Delhi. No serious understanding of 1857 can now be reached without his work.

Dalrymple's comparisons of the events leading u to 1857 and the modern day events in Iraq are startling, but IMHO compelling.

LM is also a great telling of a great story, so don't be put off by it's value as a work of history!
