Nalanda
I am travelling to Nalanda next month and I must admit I am slightly confused. According to the Indian rail website there is a train station at Nalanda yet every information I have found on the area says that local transport is needed to get into the village. Has a train station just been recently opened?
I am also looking for a handy map of the village that shows where the ancient university is located as I would prefer to walk to the site as it is only 3km out of the village. Yet I have been unable to find a map that gives me a route? If there is anyone on the forum who could answer these two questions I would be most grateful. Thanks, Richard |

There is a railway station at Nalanda, its on the main road from Bihar Sharif to Rajgir. Nalanda ruins are on a road that leads off a few kilometers from the railway station. I think that even if you do make it to Nalanda by train, you will require transport to get to the ruins. As I have explained in another thread, it might be difficult to get local transport. I was in Nalanda day before yesterday, and all I saw in the name of local transport was horse drawn carriages. you will find it difficult to hire a taxi or something over there.

Nalanda is very near to Rajgir and it is easy to stay there and get a taxi to the ruins. However, I found that in India there is always something available,if you ask. Your hotel (however modest) or your temple will know about transport. I will stay in Nalanda this year and I am not expecting any difficulties getting to the ruins or to other sites, such as Vaishali etc.

Hi Richard
There is a Train called Shramjeevi Express which runs between New Delhi and Rajgir in Bihar via Patna, Nalanda is about 20 KMs from Rajgir and 12 Kms from Biharsharif, it is better to stay at Rajgir, take a Taxi and go to Nalanda, ruins of ancient university, u can also reach Patna, capital of Bihar State by plane or train, take a Taxi from airport and go to Nalanda directly, 3 hour journey about 110 KMs. Another route is from Bodh Gaya, stay at Bodh Gaya, visit Mahabodhi Temple and other Temples, take a Taxi or u can go by bus, go to Nalanda via Rajgir. Thanks alok |

What's wrong with a horse drawn carriage?
Well! If my experience in Rajgir is anything to go by, the are an expensive racket, and go where they want to go, rather than where you want to go. I found them a waste of time, intended for tourists who want an experience, not people who want to get anywhere.Of course, Nalanda it might be different. I will be there soon as will check it out. However,in India , like most Asian countries, anything is possible if you have a little money and a little patience. No need to worry, what you want will happen. |
