Meter Gauge Trains in Bihar
Which are the meter gauge train sections in Bihar that are yet to be converted to broad gauge?
Which are the train sections leading up to the Nepal border? Is it possible to take a train inside Nepal on the other side of the Indian border, for example, from Raxaul in India and Birganj in Nepal? |

I know the answer to the last part which is no such rail in Nepal although there is an 18 mile stretch elsewhere..

You can try taking to route Samastipur-Darbhanga-Jai nagar. Jai nagar is the last station in India and just cross the border and again board a train at Janakpur in Nepal. So, both side trains are available there.

As I understand it, though scenic, that Janakpur stretch is just 18 miles.
You should be able to get the train in Bihar just before the border. But, I do not know the immigration formalities.. |

For immigration to Nepal, if you a an Indian then no need of immigration and any kind of documentation to cross the border. For safety just keep an ID card like Ration card, Voter card, Driving lisence etc. issued by Indian authorities. That's it.

My hometown is in nepal boarder area of Bihar.
There are many railway line in Bihar touching to Nepal border. Better and most obvious option is to go to Raxaul. Cross the boarder and get inside the Nepal second biggest city after Kathmandu - "Birganj". If you are not an Indian national and have Indian Visa, simply get registered to Nepal boarder (cost - US$1 and a tip of another $1). Birganj is getway of Nepal. Well world class buses for any city in Nepal. If you are hurry get shared seat in Sumo and reach Kathmandu in 5-6 hours. Same for Pokhra as well. Jainagar is again a border town in Bihar connected with broad gage (recently converted from meter gage). Jainagar and Raxaul both are well connected from Delhi with direct trains. In Nepal side Jainagar to Janakpur has 18 mile (25km) kind of toy train ride. Interesting, crowded but yet enjoyable. Janakpur is holy cityt for Hindu so respect that. From Jnakpur you again get all buses for any city in Nepal. Another route is through Sonbarsa-Viratnagar that I would not sugget. Only people well adjusted in Bihar are advisable to travel through this route. |
