You may also try doing the route from reverse side.

You may first reach Nalanda, then to Rajgir then to Bodh Gaya and then to Gaya. You can take train either to Patna or Howrah from Gaya. It would be an easier route, I believe.

You don't need to go all the way to Patna. There are any number of trains bewtween Bakhtiyarpur and Howrah.

... Golghar has correctly suggested to reach Bakhtiyarpur from Howrah and then move to Nalanda...

I am not sure if there are AC Volvo buses on that route. You can check the Bihar State Transport website.
Kedar Janani Devasthan, Mt Abu - Udaipur, Bharatpur, Agra, Gwalior, Orchha, Jhansi,
Satara

Of course I speak to myself. I need expert advice sometimes.

IMHO the best option to reach Rajgir, Nalanda, Bodhgaya, etc, starting from Calcutta is to go by road. Please arrange for a car (in case you do not have one) and start early from Calcutta. The road to Rajgir is scenic, going via Jhumri Tilaya, Koderma and Nawada and is good throughout, may be except for a short stretch of NH 31 in Jharkhand. You will be able to reach Rajgir comfortably well in time for your lunch. And in case you like to drive, I assure you that the roads of Bihar are excellent and it will be a fun to drive.

Rahul Biswas,

Hie,

I am planning to visit Rajgir this December. 21-25 is my time frame. Its a 4 people group, (2 families)

1. Is that a convenient time to visit the place. How many days we would be needing most?

2. How to reach there from Kolkata. Is it better to go via Gaya or Bakhtyarpur?

3. After going through the reviews, I feel like to stay at Tathagat Vihar, But is the location is good to access the visiting places in Rajgir?

4. What are the famous places to visit?

5. Should we use local transport on a daily basis? or should we hire car for the whole tour beforehand? If so, please provide contact.

6. How much would be standard expense per person on an average?

The timing is perfect. The place will be crowded as it is peak season. The weather will be peak winter. Do carry heavy woollens.
To reach there, the shortest route is get down at Bakhtiarpur and take a taxi or train to Rajgir.
If you have plans to visit Bodhgaya also then in makes sense to go to Gaya.
The famous places are the hot water spring, the ropeway to the stupa, Bimbisar's Jail, the Ajatshatru Fort, Jarasandh Akhara and the nearby ruins of Nalanda.
Four days are sufficient for the trip including Bodhgaya.

Bihar State Tourism Development Corp. runs AC Bus services in tourist season for these places. Find all details here and plan accordingly.
