thanx guys for all the invaluable suggestions. i hit paydirt at last at this store called looking good on int ring road in k'mangala. he has pocket sprung made by sleep symphony. cost me 20,000 though. so i hope to visit all my dream destinations in my dreams now!

I'm looking for a spare cotton mattress, for when I have people over. Does anyone know where to get plain cotton mattresses in Bangalore, nearabouts the city centre? I went walking all over Commercial Street/ Dispensary Road and all of those other hellish places yesterday but no soap. Will try off Infantry Road like Malkers suggested, but does anyone know of places closer to MG Road – definitely NOT the Homestop variety, though!

How much closer to MG Road do you need. Take the road that crosses MG Road from St Marks Road (Koshys) and then go straight over at the next set of lights into a tighter street with lots of shops and look on your right hand side for a ton of mattresses spilling out on to the pavement. This is where I bought mine, if he doesn't have what you want he will get it for you. This is just before the junction with Infantry Road, you could walk there in 10 minutes from MG Road.

I just bought a Pocketed Springwell mattress from a dealer in Bangalore. There is nothing on the mattress that says that it is a pocketed spring mattress! How do I know if what I got is a Bonnell Spring mattress or a pocketed spring mattress? I got an odd size mattress which they had to specially order. From the sides it looks like a Bonnell spring mattress since it does not have the air vents and rope handle like the pocketed spring mattress' do, it has 2 cloth handles like the bonnell spring mattress' do. How do I know I got what I paid for? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

My wife did a lot of researching & found that most of the Five Star DLX. hotels in India buy from a super specialty manufacturer up north called Snoozer.

We ordered one & then another three.Probably the most expensive in India around Rs.35 K each but same ol' english mattress comfort ( no wonder the hoteliers swear by it.

Lately I beleive it is finally available in Retail at Drapes Avenue.

I would be willing to swear by our local Restolex dealer. I had never heard of this brand before I moved here, but I must say that our mattresses are wonderful. I was surprised; it is just like mine in the US. Not sure if ours was a special order but I don't think so.

You can call Pradeep at 98452-08225 and he will be able to help you. Cost will probably be about Rs. 10-15k, but well worth it---deep, comfy mattress that will not cause you a bad backache in the AM!

Right on MG Road there is that circular-shaped shopping complex (god the name escapes me right now). Anyway, the back entrance is on Church Street; the front entrance is on MG Road. There is a mattress guy there called, I believe, Abro Agencies; I think he has both foam & cotton mattresses. Go for just a rug on the floor just in case you don't want your guests to overstay their welcome!

The best - the best - sleep I've ever had, bar none, is when I sleep on a clean, swabbed floor, on a straw mat. On the floor with the fan on or on an open rooftop, at night, in a hot place - like Chennai. One small cotton pillow ok.

Try it before you knock it.

Oh, Mrs N can do it, but she'll forgive me for saying that she has the, err, padding! I cannot, or at least not for the past two or three decades.

As for my very own Chennai rooftop, the mosquitoes would leave no flesh on my bones and the ants would polish them .

But it would save a heap of money on AC elecrticity!

Last week we bought a latex foam matress from a company called Foams India It is such a relief to no longer have to lie on that dreadful choir thing which I was promised would get softer with use but never did. This gives good support, without being either sinky or too soft. very good value for money, and I should say that those who have never slept on anything but pocket springs would find it an alternative well worth investigating.

It is cool, too. We used to have a piece of foam on top of the horrible choir to make it bearable for me, and the latex mattress is noticably cooler. It does indeed breathe!

Their pillows are good too, and I have never used anything put feather/down before.

Thank god (there, I've even become religious!) to have got rid of that dreadful concrete- (sorry, choir-) stuffed mattress!
