I'll be leaving Chennai on 3rd June (I can also leave on the evening of 2nd June) and I've to be in Bangalore on the evening of 6th June.
I have two options:
1. Fly back to Delhi on 3rd June and fly back to Bangalore on 6th June.
2. Leave Chennai on 2/3rd June, go to some place around that region and get into Bangalore by 6th June.

I fancy option 2, coz this not only saves money (by not flying twice), but also gives me that rare few days to travel a bit.

I'm looking for suggestions, where can I go for these few days?
-I'm not looking to go to a touristy town/city like Mysore/ooty.
-I'd like to be in someplace which is cooler, no/less pollution and near to nature.
-Not very expensive.
-Not very far from Banaglore, so that I don't waste much time in just being on the road for ever.
-Is it possible to hire/rent a jeep/car from bangalore/chennai and drive myself and leave it at Bangalore when I'm back?

Any suggestions/pointers will be very helpful.

The contributor of the best suggestion or the suggestion I pick, will win him/her a dinner at the restaurant of his/her choice when & where ever we meet in India.

Nope, I haven't read any travel guides in last 3 years...
seriously..why I'm asking this is, I'll be with one of my friend/collegue from Australia. His 1st trip to India was in Feb to Chennai, I took him to Mahabalipuram, we stayed at Taj Fishermen's cove..all nice and expensive.
This time I want him to get bit down to Indian earth and show him something different from Temples, beach, expensive hotels, expensive food and spa. I know he'll like it(he is a good trekker) but ..I'm still searching for the right place.
Yeah I know, I can go to Yercaud, even to Kodia but there must be some place apart from these touristy, where you not only get bit comfy (Not looking at Rs300/day place) at the same time, its not touristy and away from the crowd, but not in the middle of ungles of Mudumalai or western ghats.
Thanks Sudheer

Thumbs up Is this a repeat?

Vinay:

Unsure if I responded to you or someone else with a very similar posting. If I did to you, sorry for repeating myself.

With just a few days time, I suggest hiring a cab/taxi service and driving from Bangalore to Mysore area. You can avoid the typical tourists stops and I would recommend the following. The climate in Mysore area is very nice all year.

1. Stop at Rhanganthitu Bird Sanctury on route. Not sure the season but usually that is a fairly quick but nice stop.

2. Stop at Madhur railway Stations, also on route. Must have the famous Madhur Vadai and the station is known for it by all the locals. Avoid the chutney though for health reasons, even though it is heavenly.

3. Past Mysore (some 70 kms) try out Nagerhole National Park. I stayed at the Jungle Inn, at the main entrance of the PArk. It is a private resort that provides two trips a day for wildlife viewing. The setting, the climate, the whole place is so very relaxing. They can also take you between the wildlife viewing to a nearby Tibetan refugee settlement and also some Falls.

We had so much time. parents relaxed and felt refreshed by the environment and the kids to this day (after 4 years) talk about that experience.

As to prices and contact see India Mike/Hotel Listings/ Karnataka/Jungle Inn.

There is also Kabini River Lodge but they have recived mixed reviews.

Hope this gives some info..

Hi Vinay.....

3-4 days ... coorg should be the place u are looking for .... you can do a nice round trip..
Day 1: Bangalore -- Shivanasamudra falls (donno if there is water now) -- Rhanganthitu Bird Sanctury -- Mysore (night halt, don't have to move arround ... :-))
Day2: Mysore -- KushalNagar (tibeatian Monastry its very good) --- Madikeri (night Halt) go arround the place its nice cool and calm there are many places arround so u can check them
Day3: Madikeri -- Sakleshpur/Hassan along western ghats ... its a nice drive but narrow roads and u'll have to travel slowly, but its worth it ... u could also get to Belur - Halebidu and then rest in Hassan.
Day4: Hasan - Bangalore and zzzzzzzzzz......

I have done this trip on bikes it was good ... though the Madikeri - Sakleshpur Road is a lil bumpy coz its not even a state highway(I guess) but the scenery is gr8 and very little traffic. There is a fort when this road meets bangalore - Mangalore highway a few kms from sakleshpur ... its worth a visit too....

Cheers
There are 3 ways to interpretation yours, mine and the right one....

Sad, my Australian friend is dropping out of this 'Indian Adventure'. He plans to fly back directly from Chennai. So I can be more adventureous and can have wide choices.

Thanks ddevadatta, Madur Vedai sounds yummy. this loks good. I checked out the website for the Jungle Inn and also Kabini river logde(Both are run by the same company), the river logde also looks impressive. What are the bad reviews about it, things I need to be careful with them?
Can I do Jungle inn trip by local bus or hitch hiking? (I've done hitch hiking on trucks on Banglore- Pune highway earlier) or do you think this is asking for too much on this route.

Thanks nagarkrishna, is it possible to hire motorcycle from banglore for this trip, or even self driven 4 wheeler? Coz, I think this route will be bit difficult using the public transport, am I right?

Thanks again....any Banglore IMer wanna join for this weekend trip ?

You can hire cars self driven from Bangalore .... chk these http://www.virtualbangalore.com/Tou/TouTransp.php#car
Not sure of motorcycles though.
Hire a car/motorbike, thats the best ... also you may be tempted to buy some coffee beans and other things when in madikeri (if u are goin there) they are the best i've had ...

Vinay,

I have some good options.....

Go to
1. South coorg..to a place called Kutta. It is close to Nagarhole NP and Wyanad wild life sanctuary.

or

2. Go to Chikmagalur..

I know home stay options in both the above places....there are away from the bustle of the city, they are nice and quite places....close to nature..what more do u need.

If u want...i can give u address / contacts of both the home stay options.

Just perfect for 3 to 4 days vacation.

Vinay , All the suggestions here are good. Here is an itinery:

Bangalore-Hassan-Belur (and Halebid if possible)-Hassan-Dharmasthala-Udupi-Agumbe-Sringeri-Chikmagalur-Hassan-Bangalore.

Hassan-Udupi-Sringeri-Chikmagalur is through lush forests on the Western Ghats with lots of coffee plantations. Agumbe is a wet , misty place amonst the hills that will cool you down in a trice. Sringeri is a nice little town amongst hills on the banks of a wonderful river. One of the four seats of the Shankaracharya with a nice temple. Udupi is close to the sea. Kaup beach is great. Hassan can be a stopover for Belur and Halebid...exciting temples.
...and I took the road less travelled.

Thanks Nagakrishna, I'll check with the guys on the list for the cars, but guess self driven would be difficult to get. For motocycle, I'm trying contact my friends at Enfield club in Bangalore to get some info. Hope for the best.

Lonelyaztec: Thanks both looks great. If I may assume, Kutta is a small place where I can stay for few days and maybe go to waters falls nearby but mainly a place where one can relax in the natural beauty. Whereas Chikmangalur is one place where I can base myself at chikmagalur and then travel bit north and south to visit Kudermukh and Kemengundi, etc.. right? I know there are regular buses to Chikmagalur, but how to get to Kutta? Do I need to hire a car/motorcyle(if possible) or there is public transport connections?
Thanks for the homestay options, if I go there, I'll love to stay at a homestay.

Kabini River Lodge is fine for you, V . . . only a fussy person would grouse about it, AND food is very good, IMHO.

Thumbs up Vinay/Jungle

Hey Vinay:

What some of my family experienced at Kabini was not the best service. They felt they were taken for granted. I went to kabini a few years ago and frankly the food isn't as good as Jungle Inn. At the later place the food is more home cooked style and catered to smaller parties. The atmosphere in the thatched room also added to the experience.

Don't get me wrong. Kabini is a good place. But now there in an alternative with Jungle Inn. Used to be the only place. Jungle Inn has a different owner who I know) than Kabini. It is a private resort that does cater to guests of all kinds, locals travelers, foreigners.

Ask for SR Aruna there and mention my name (Dan Devadatta) and perhaps this might assist.

Yes, please try the Madhur Vadai. It is different from the typical Medhu Vadai, of Udipi fame. I like both. But Madhur Vadai can be got only there whereas Medhu Vadai can be obtained in any Udipi Restaurant all over. It is a local and travelers treat.
