Yup, the adult version of the gagra-choli is often worn by actresses in Bollywood movie song and dance sequences. Here's a pic of Priyanka Chopra ( very famous Bollywood actress ) modeling one: http://nicefun.net/userpix/4_Priyank..._Choli_1_1.jpg

There is the concept of the half-sari for kids ( maybe not just for kids ) in the south of India isn't there ? What about getting that ?

Half sari... I nearly mentioned it --- but then one has to explain the whole concept!

Not sure, but I think there are regional and cultural differences, and I have two experiences of half sari.

Here it is considered very old fashioned. It would have been, I guess, the pre-puberty girl's dress, and she moves in to a sari afterwards. I sometimes see schoolgirls wearing it; I suspect there is one school where they have it as uniform at least on some days.

It is a skirt and blouse, with a piece like a sari palu tucked in to the waist, turned around the back, across the chest and draped over the left shoulder like a sari pallu.

But the ones I see here are almost always simple and plain --- maybe because it has such an old-fashioned image that nobody bothers to elevate it to a fashion garment!

The ones that the Sri Lankan music students wear, in London, were much more ornate, often silk, and probably quite expensive. Very beautiful.

Half saris seem to remain popular among our local hijra. I'm glad somebody is maintaining the tradition!

While I won't post the results - these conversations have a tendency to degenerate - I just googled "half-saree designs" in google images -

They must all be Sri Lankans

Edit: remove extraneous guff at end of link

Broken link --- but I did the same google.

Smart, aren't they (at least the first page or so). But the London girls' stuff used to be much more ornate than that!

<later> Just google half-sari ...

NICK-H,
I too love SARI's, I am not Indian but had a male Indian friend for 25 years, I did wear them on several occations. I think that the Indian lady that wears the SARI is the prettiest in the whole world.
And I loved the pictures that you presented, BRISHTI.
Now for the important thing concerning Bangalore!!!!!! THE BEAUTIFUL "BAKTIC", I do not know if I spelled it correctly. I bought about 5 real Baktic Sari's when I was in Bangalore back in the late 80's and they are just as pretty now as when I bought them, the real ones you cannot tell back or front. And by the way they went throught the salt water great flood of Katrina, I rescued and washed them. Please let me know the places to buy them for when I get back to Bangalore someday.
Sincerely, gypsie

Stitched Sari & Childrens Sari

As Raghu mentioned, special childrens saris are also available, I have seen them in Mumbai so there is no reason why they should not be available in a big, trendy city like Bangalore.

You can also buy a sari or any suitable length of material and get it made up by the local tailor into a "stitched sari" in a childrens size. Ready made stitched saris are available for adults.

The half sari, traditionally worn by unmarried young girls in Tamil Nadu, is also quite elegant and easy to make up with your own choice of any fabric. Sort of like a lehnga choli but with the dupatta draped like a sari pallav. I wonder if today's young girls wear them anymore. The simple 'pavadai shattai' worn by younger children is also cute.

Have fun shopping, and do let us know what you come up with.

Yes, I got that wrong in earlier posts.

Not much, see my post above. One does see girls on the street in Chennai, or working, in half saris, but very few. Maybe more in rural areas?

And wow!

Here's a little tiny girl being draped in a madisar, which is a very complex type of sari, worn without a skirt as part of it goes between the legs. -->Madisar drape.

This kind of sari is worn by Tamil Brahmin women and, hey! I just learnt the difference between Ayer and Ayengar styles!

I have learned so much from everyone! Never heard of a half sari either. I don't think I would have recognized it. I couldn't figure it out but found this video on YouTube and now I think I understand. It's so nice! Hope it comes back into style. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gn-Y-ffiVyg&feature=fvw

You're welcome.

And, taking a local lady to shop with you, especially if she is a mum, is probably the very best idea

HI NICK-H,
What about the BAKTIC from Bangalore? Does anyone know? And please correct my spelling of Baktic.
They make such beautiful and rich looking sari's and oh so soft. The material is like tissue paper, but very durable.
sincerely, gypsie
