train trips from Bangalore

My family and I have about 6 months left in Bangalore and we are done flying domestically, especially with the rumored new airport. Taking the train has been great - done it twice to Hampi.
So, I am wondering if anyone has some great 3-5 day train trips from Bangalore. We have two small kids who love the overnight trains.

Overnight trains can be taken to Trichy, Madurai, Thanjavur, Cochin, Kottayam, Hyderabad, Tirupati (slow passenger train), Mangalore, Chennai, Bijapur (3 days a week) Badami (soon), Goa (3 days a week).

But I would choose the following.

An overnight train to Shimoga Town, then there is a railbus (may no longer be running) to Talguppa, then it's 18kms to Jog Falls, if no railbus, a short auto ride to Shimoga bus station, then a 3 hour bus to Jog Falls.

4 or 5 hours by the falls, then a bus (a taxi would be easier, should cost less than Rs1000) to Murudeshwar, great hotels, and a very good place to visit, have at least 2 nights in Murudeshwar, then maybe to Udipi or Mangalore, then overnight train from Mangalore back to Bangalore.

This may be a stupid question but what is a railbus? We seem to do better when we pick one place and go there and then come back instead of multiple destinations. Then the kids get to know people, food, etc and become a little more comfortable.
Would you recommend Murudeshwar for a 3-4 night stay?

And how are Mangalore beaches - not in terms of fanciness but in terms of hanging out and having space to play?
