Train to mammalapuram (mahabalipuram) from Bangalore?

Hello
I will be travelling from Bangalore to Mammalapuram. After looking at the map I understand that the train does not stop in Mammalapuram, the closest train stop seems to be in Chengalpattu.

One obvious thing to do would be to go by train to Chennai, and bus from there. The thing is, I´m travelling with two small children and we prefer travelling by train.

So my question is:
1. Has anybody made the journey from Bangalore to Chengalpattu?
2. How long by bus/taxi from Chenalpattu to Mammalapuram?
3. Is it a lengthy detour to take the train to Chenalpattu, and then bus from there, instead of just taking the bus from Chennai?
4. Any other input/ideas?

All the best India travellers
Aum sweet aum

It would be a longer route for you to go from Bangalore to Chengalpattu and then to Mamallapuram and also involves more inconveniences.

Since you are in Bangalore, arrive in Chennai...take a bus or an auto to Koyambedu Bus station. YOu will find lots of buses every 5 minutes to Mamallapuram. Some buses that go to Pondicherry(now Puducherry)also pass thru Mamallapuram.
From Chennai, it takes about 1.5hrs max by bus. Also you will like the east coast road that the bus takes to M'puram.

If you take a taxi or a car, you can visit many interesting places enroute which the children like most..MGM, VGP, crocadile park etc.

Hello citybell
Thank you so much for your quick answer! I´ve also somewhere else as well, that the road is very nice, so I guess I´ll stick with train to chennai, and then bus from there.

Cheers :-)

As i said in my message, the east coast road (normally called as ECR)is a nice road leading to M'purama and Puducherry.ECR route is shorter , beautiful and faster.

While you travel in the bus, take the window seats that are on left side so that you can the scenery enroute.

Have a nice time.

ECR Road (as it gets called) = East Coast Road Road

And I was just joing to ask what the word for that is, ...and it came to me: tautology

Thanks...
