Tahini anyone?

Has anyone happened to see tahini in any grocery store in Bangalore? In case you are unfamiliar with it, tahini is sesame seed paste that is a major component of many Middle Eastern dishes. I haven't seen it anywhere, and would love to get my hands on some. Hummus, yummmmmm!

I usually make it on the spot by whizzing sesame seeds + olive oil/sesame oil in the grinder jar of a mixie. You can use a coffee grinder as well. Just add the oil in stages till you get a smooth paste.
The seeds and oils are easily available in most stores.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Xyka, I am such a dummy, I didn't even think of making it myself.

I guess that's what happens when one gets spoiled with ready-made everything, it leaves you oblivious to the simplest solution...

It's about the only form of sesame that I dislike, so I haven't been looking either, but I also have not seen it.

I think it is Mediterranean in origin?

You can also try www.recipezaar.com for from-scratch versions of food you otherwise could get ready-made, including 'cream-of-X soup', marshmallows, etc.

Yes; the Mid-East in question is the eastern Mediterranean. (Israel, Egypt, Turkey, etc.)

Also known as tahina (the sesame paste). Sesame paste is a common ingredient in some East Asian cuisines btw, but it's arrived at by a different process and so bears no resemblance, they can't be interchanged.

Look also for recipes for hummus, indeed.

Ah, yes... now you remind me, I remember all those falafel (err, if that's anything like how you spell t?) at an Israeli restaurant in London many years back --- with tahini.

Killer Chummous

Recipe By Diet for a Small Planet
Preparation Time :1:00

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------

4 each lemons
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 head garlic -- small
salt -- to taste
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon paprika
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 cup tahini

Drain garbanzos, do something else with the liquid. (One of my cats likes to drink it).

In food processor, mash the beans until smooth; add lemon juice as needed. When the beans are fairly smooth, blend in garlic, tahini, oil and spices.

To serve, drizzle with oil, lemon juice, cayenne.

I've seen tahini at Namdhari Fresh and at MK Retail in Indiranagar. The brand is 'Naturellement' made in Auroville.

I've found three shops to be rather useful in sourcing out-of-the-way ingredients.

1. Gourmet Store on MG Road. It's right by the Deccan Herald building.
2. Maison de Gourment on Lavelle Road. It's kinds diagonally opposite the Java City.
3. Namdhari's on MM Road in the Frazer Town area.
