Shopping in Bangalore
Hi there,
Im new here so not entirely sure if I should be posting in this section Im from Melbourne, and will be tagging along with my husband to Bangalore while he goes for work for a month. I'm keen on getting a few things done while I'm there and would absolutely love recommendations ![]() 1) Get some salwar kameez tailored: where do I get well priced material and find a reasonable tailor? 2) Get some sarees 3) Buy some homewares, such as indian inspired linen, tablecloths etc 4) Get some suits tailored for my husband 5) Spa pampering sessions/ Ayurvedic treatments I've read some of the posts here and they've been so helpful, especially with what to wear. Thank you! |

The state of Karnataka is known for the fine silk that is produced here. Visit Karnataka State emporium & buy silk material for your Salwar Kameez. The people in the emporium will tell you about a good tailor.

I would really suggest to have someone, like a co-workers wife where your husband works to accompany you on the shopping trips. Local person would know off the beaten places to shop and someome to bargain on our behalf. For tailored suit get the suit material from RAYMOND shop, some of the raymond shops have tailors at the store or you will have to find a TAILOR again someone local can help you find one that will tailor the suit in 4 weeks time. |

[quote=smittenkitten5]Hi there,
1) Get some salwar kameez tailored: where do I get well priced material and find a reasonable tailor? --->> commercial street would be a good choice. plenty of shops around to choose salwar material and you can get it stichd in one of the tailor shops nearby. 2) Get some sarees --->> It depends on what kind of sarees you would want to buy. If silk sarees, Nalli silks or Deepam silks on the M.G road (the road everyone knows in Bangalore 3) Buy some homewares, such as indian inspired linen, tablecloths etc ---> Jaya nagar fourth block (market) has handful of shops where you can pick these things up. There are few expensive places too on M.G road, if you are looking for household stuff. 4) Get some suits tailored for my husband ---> Brigade road or M.G road where you can find shops to pick some suits. But I do have some concern on the quality. I bought one suit in the Shop called Theme. decent one. Try it out. Check out for Raymonds as well. 5) Spa pampering sessions/ Ayurvedic treatments --->> Ayurvedagram near whitefield or check some places in and around Indira nagar. someone else in the forum might help you with more info. Cheers Zendo |

Thanks heaps for that info, I'll check all of these places out. And I'll try to get someone to take me around! Another question, is tamil widely spoken? I speak tamil as a second language and was wondering if this would help?

wowsa! It is and it is not. Certain areas like Ulsoor, Malleshwaram, Indiranagar, parts of Jayanagar, yes; others not so much. But you can get by in Tamil,at least beat the auto rickshaw fare down if he does not use the meter. Or while buying, it can help sweeten the deal.

This isn't a plug, but...you can get really good Ayurvedic treatments, massage etc, at the Ashram.
Art of Living Ashram, 21st km Kanakpura Road. They have a Panchkarma Centre, and a fully equipped Ayurvedic Centre.
