shopping for stone statues in Bangalore
Looks like I'm going to BLR for a few days at the end of my Pakistan trip. Soooooo . . . I know about Cauvery Arts, which has great statues in the Hoysala style, as I bought one last year. What I'd like is a Mahaballipuram made statue of Hanuman. Cauvery doesn't have Mahabs stone, alas . . . anyone know of where I could find one in BLR? Or, any stores for stone statues even better than Cauvery? Alas, I won't have time to take a day off and make a dash for the beach
![]() thanx in advance ![]()

Made some more enquiries. Could not get information about Mahabalipuram made statues in Bangalore. However found out that Shivarapatnam near Kolar is famous for sculpting statues of God. Also found a news article related to this. Read "Vittala Krishna idol arrives in Mulbagal" part. http://www.deccanherald.com/archives/nov232004/d6.asp
My friend also mentioned that somebody well known in Devanahalli sculpts statues of God. He could not re-collect the sculptor's name. This person is so famous that one has to just ask around in Devanahalli to be pointed in the right direction. Devanahalli is near Bangalore and this is where the new airport is being built. |

Looks like it's actually called Shivarapatna.
http://www.stonecraftindia.org/about...aft-south.html - Interesting article about Stonecrafts of South India. Shivarapatna finds a mention. Looks like some effort is being put so that this ancient art doesn't die out. Same website contains an article on Stonecrafts of North India too. http://i2thots.blogspot.com/2006/11/...-grandeur.html - A blog on Shivarapatna. |

Found exactly what I wanted at Natesans on MG rd, BLR. The price was high, but I hadn't seen anthing remotely like what I wanted anywhere else, so I went for it. Thanx for everyone's help.
Only in India part of the story: looked in Delhi, cheh, nuthin struck my fancy. Looked in BLR, same story. then, along comes a street urchin with a picture of Hanuman enshrined on a thali plate with incens and flowers. since it was H I was in search of, I drop some chips into the plate. Next store . . . ayep, EXACTLY what I was lookin fer ![]() |
