Teasing takes on parochial tone in IT firm
BS Reporter / Chennai/ Bangalore March 04, 2008
Sasken sacks accused employee.

Teasing a fellow worker on linguistic lines not only cost a techie his job but also saw brought his company’s operations to a grinding halt following public outrage on Monday. The incident occurred at Sasken Communication Technologies Ltd, located on Airport Road in Bangalore.

Scores of pro-Kannada activists under the aegis of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike ransacked the company premises and resorted to slogan-shouting against the management after a Kannada television channel aired videos of the techie singing a poem penned by him. The poem, which the activists claimed was a derogatory song, was intended to ridicule Kannadigas. The accused techie has been identified only as Lee, a Canadian national.
Hmm... looks like tolerance is going for a toss in bangalore...

Text of the poem

I took a look at the poem.. but found nothing that offensive to warrant such an extreme display

When living in an alien land dont you think it is better not to offend the natives whose hospitality you are enjoying. We dont know the background under which the incident took place. Most probable lee must have been in the habit of teasing the locals and hence the animosity. Friendly ribbing is always taken in the right spirit and doesnt escalate to the level this has gone.

unless i missed something...i agree it does not seem to be offensive...unless the "effect' has been lost in translation...assuming it was not in english to begin with..

...typical reaction...riots, looting, vandalism, mob, shouting , screaming.... the phrase "peaceful protest' does not seem to exist in our vocabular...

What were the cops doing? Cops in India have a habit of looking the other way when mobs go on rampage destroying public/private property.

Groups indulging in vandalism must be made to pay for the damage caused by their memebers.

What a heap of nonsense.

And what a bad poem. Perhaps the mob were all literary critics?

Language chauvinism, and the politics that uses it as a weapon, are powerful movements here: not to be messed with.
