Bangalore: Old-School Eateries

Hey, this month's Outlook Traveller has a good article on ancient idly/dosa/vada joints that are still going strong. Can't find it online, but the places covered are

MTR (duh)
Brahmin's Cafe (Shankarpuram)
Gumdappa's Hotel (Nagarthpet)
BB Bakery (Iyengar Cross)
Vidyarthi Bhavan (in Gandhi Bazaar)
New Krishna Bhavan (Malleswaram)

I haven't been to any of them (not even MTR--too crowded!), but I hope to remedy that soon.

Is that BB Bakery or VB Bakery in V.V. Puram (Food Street)?

Prashant, it's BB Bakery, at 22 BVK Iyengar Cross, in Chikpet. Supposedly the place started in 1898.

I had lunch at MTR recently. Read about it here:
http://india-outside-my-window.blogs...ch-at-mtr.html

By the way, it only looks crowded because they let everyone in the dining hall at the same time since the service is canteen-style where they come around with stainless steel buckets and everyone is served at the same time. Worth the wait anyway, it's not only a meal but an experience!

Veena Stores, 15th Cross, Margosa Road, Malleshwaram for excellent Idlis and Vadas. Don't expect any seating as there is none. It's just a shop doling out delicious food.

yes, i had breakfast there one day when i was in BLR. it's a streetside shop, apparently the owner makes 8000 idlis every morning and they're all gone in the first three hours. the idlis were excellent, very tasty, light and fluffy. i also had the khara pongal which was just mediocre. my sister was raving about the chutney but i didn't dare try it for fear of getting sick.
