Hindi Spoken in Bangalore?
Hindi Spoken in Bangalore?
I may be moving to Bangalore because my husband may have a job there. I'm not Indian but have studied Hindi for twenty years. Will I get to use it in Bangalore? I would be really frustrated if I were living in India and stuck speaking English all the time! I could try to learn Kannada but it would probably take years, and we would only be there a couple of years. Maybe I could learn Kannada quickly, as I do know Hindi, but I'm not sure how quickly. What do you think? Would I be able to use Hindi at the market, etc.? I visited Cochin a few years ago and no one there could speak Hindi with me at all! I was stuck speaking English, which wasn't easy or fun! Thanks for your insights.
You will get to use it, perhaps more in social settings than with small time shopkeepers or such on a day to day basis. Many Hindi speaking people in Bangalore, now that it attracts people for work from across the country.

You could manage with Hindi as there are lot of people who have moved from the North as Captain suggested. But Kannada is a little different from Hindi and pretty easy to learn....if you learn the basics, its easier to manage everyday things. Lot of people in Bangalore also speak Tamil and Telugu and if they are educated they are also familiar with Hindi and English!

No sweat! You'll get by fine with Hindi in Bangalore, and will get to use it far more than English everyday, if you so wish! This is from years of personal experience of doing just that! Sure Kannada will help, but you can manage even if you don't know it (of course, you'll be taken advantage of at times
). I don't think knowing Hindi will help you much in learning Kannada, however.
