Glasses, contacts, and Lasik in Bangalore?
My mother is coming to visit with me and my husband here in Bangalore this June. She mentioned to me the other day that she had just returned from an appointment with her optometrist who told her that she needs to update both her lenses and her contacts. This would run her maybe around $1000 for both so I suggested that maybe she could wait and get them in Bangalore as I am sure they are much cheaper here.
So here are my questions: 1. Did I open my big mouth too soon? My mom's prescription is a little complicated (no line trifocals for her specs I think), does anyone know if these types of lenses can be obtained in Bangalore (I assume so but don't know for sure)?2. Does anyone in Bangalore know of a trusted optometrist, ophthalmologist, or optician that I could contact about the specifics? I see shops all over the place but would be much more comfortable going to one that comes recommended. 3. Lasik may be a possibility for her as well, has anyone had this done in Bangalore and have a name and number that they could pass along? Thanks for your help...

Suzi,
Right behind Safina Plaza (on the "Crystal Clean" drycleaners side) there is an ICICI ATM. Next to that is a good optometrist--I believe it's called Waugh Eye Clinic. Sorry, do not have the # but if you're in that area, you can check them out. Dr. seemed quite skilled & well-trained; very professional & the place was clean and tidy. |

One would think that contacting a qualified doctor and getting lenses/ surgery at a facility recommended by him covers all the bases in the effort to get reliable eye-care. Well, think again. The doctors get a kickback from the providers, as I learnt while getting mild astigmatism corrected on my younger son's right eye.
You can't avoid getting to know some details about cornea measurement (got it done 3 times at 3 different clinics, with different results!) and excimer lasers, but the result is worth extra effort. Also take reccos from unbiased members on as many chat boards as you can. My own choice, based on an aquaintance's experience: http://www.nethradhama.org/announce.html Dr Sri Ganesh came highly recommeded. We got it done at the above facility. No regrets: would return for another procedure, if required. And yes, the costs for both lenses and procedures are significantly lower in India: the doctor's fees are much lower. |
