Buying/Flying Kites in Bangalore
I am wondering if any of you know where I can buy kites in Bangalore? I have been Googling for thirty minutes now without much success. A couple of stores near my house that kinda keep all sorts of stuff don't seem to have them.
And then, any recommendations for a nice place in South Bangalore for flying Kites? But that part comes after buying a kite. ![]() |

Anywhere in India, how can this possibly be difficult? Is Bangalore that hopelessly modernized?
![]() Seriously though, I bet a lot of those kite-flyers build them themselves. You could google around for instructions. Experiment with various designs & have fun I'm sure the basic model goes something like a couple of light (bamboo/rattan? or any kind of reed) twigs/lengths of wood & some light (crepe?) paper. & A length of light rope, of course (fishing line?) I think for balance it's essential to get that basic prolonged diamond shape, with one end shorter than the other. The possibilities seem to be practically endless though (squares, cubes, mega-3D-dragons to be flown by 20 people, you name it). Oh, for added balance, don't forget the tail! In the case of that not-quite-diamond, you want this at the longer/heavier end, of course.Agree though, a swanky commercial design for personal use may be hard to beat. Tried any sports/games shops? Alternatively, ask some kids (or adults for that matter) on the street, preferably the kind that fly kites ![]()

Usually they are made out of plastic, not paper.
And don't forget the glass powder to rub into the string! ... which is part of the reason that they are illegal! Not that that stops anyone, but people die every year from getting kite strings around their necks.

Are they illegal if not used for kite fights though (i.e., minus the glass powder)? That surprises me, in many cities you (used to...) see them all over the place. A Varanasi rooftop view at dusk... ahhh
![]() Arunchs, here's some links to get you started: http://www.blueskylark.org/zoo/ http://plans.kitez.com/ http://www.instructables.com/id/Some-Kiting-Basics/, note those step-by-step sections there. These were taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kite , which as usual features a bunch of links at bottom. Have fun with it Pics of end product expected! |
