Bangalore Safety tips

as issued by my company which shall remain nameless. Please DO read it as it's written up by the security team who do know what's happening around the city. they have a finger on the pulse of the city as most people hired were from the services.

Hi Friends,

Some concerns with the emerging pattern of crime in the city need to be addressed by us on a war footing. The tips enumerated below are based on incidents reported by our colleagues in the recent past. Keep them in mind while out of the campus, at shopping malls and especially at traffic junctions.

Never trust a stranger. In fact don’t stop to get involved with one, unless it's for assistance at the site of an accident.

When alone and traveling by auto/cab at night, (especially ladies) make sure you pass on the auto Registration number to a friend with the estimated time of arrival at your destination. Make sure the driver also hears this conversation.

Never discuss your immediate plans as you get into a hired vehicle.

In case you are to withdraw cash from an ATM en-route, ensure the driver has no information of the same. Cases have been reported when after drawal of cash, the drivers associates, having been tipped off by him on mobile phone, have staged a heist in which the driver is also made out to be the victim.

Never permit unknown persons/drivers associates to ride in the same vehicle you have hired.

In case the vehicle stops at a secluded/lonely spot and the driver makes an excuse of engine malfunction/no fuel, it is advisable to get down from the vehicle and from a little distance, observe his remedial actions.

Ensure safe custody of your credit/debit cards. Fraudulent use of a card is the responsibility of the owner. Sign your card immediately on receipt.

Remember, careless handling of your card is only a temptation to others.

While out on the roads ensure safe custody of your belongings like hand-phones and ladies purses/bags. Cases of snatching of these items are being reported daily.

When you buy a new mobile phone take the trouble of recording the IMEI number. This is also endorsed on your Warranty Card. In event of your phone being stolen, lodge an FIR stating the item was stolen, (in case you register it as lost, remember it will be construed that it was lost due to your negligence and the police are not obliged to continue their investigations.)

Armed with a copy of the FIR you can now approach the service provider to disable the equipment ( if not trace it) thus rendering it unusable.

Finally, do not lend your cell to strangers on the road. They will take hold of it and make a speedy get away. With the volume of traffic on the roads, it gets impossible for you to give chase. In case they get away in/on a vehicle you could endeavor to note the vehicle registration number.

When out of the campus it is recommended to keep your ID badge safe in your pocket/purse.

Take care.

Let me put

it this way. The company has 10K+ employees in this city alone, at any given moment after 7pm, till 4am in the morning there are about 200 people leaving after working late in the office.

Statistically, the chances of these chaps getting into a fracas whether warranted or not is high. Second, the number of campus freshers who flash money, cellphone, credit cards in an unbelievably stupid way has to be seen to be believed. Perish the thought of stupid yanks, european or other jokes of getting ripped off, these kids are an open invitation for skimming in the above mentioned ways.

An easy target for anyone criminally inclined.

I think the reason why tourists find it just a /little/ safer here is that why would a crook go after a high profile 'white' man/woman who's more likely to file an FIR than an Indian who's protestations at the Police station receive a little less atttention.

NO racism implied here.

Common sense

Sounds like common sense to me, the sort of advice that would be just as likely to apply in London, Glasgow, San Francisco or Chicago - I'd consider Bangalore to be alot safer than all of the above.

If you're nervous, call a cab, don't catch an auto.

If you're stupid, don't walk round with valuables on show or cash in your hand.

If you're both of the above - stay at home and go to the mall during daylight in your car.

Blimey, sometimes I wonder....?
