In 2004 I was in Bangalore and walked in to a salon for a haircut.
The girl nearly had a heart attack and it caused a major titter among the other girls working in the salon. The owner had to be called out from the spa section to explain why I cannot get a haircut. "Ladies only". Earthling gave the owner his views on sexism and business opportunities of course. Anyways, it was a nice looking place, and the owner was a fine woman. I believe her ultimate plan was to franchise the brand to all cities. Don't know if that happened and for the life of me can't remember what it was called. There used to be a Hyundai or Opel showroom down the end of Brigades (in the lane opposite Indiana, behind the petrol station). I vaguely remember it was opposite this showroom, or down the road. Somewhat near Shoppers Stop. Ground floor of a shopping mall, road facing. Very American in appearance, brightly lit, lots of light wood, all the right colours. If you see it you'll know it's the place. Huge place with a spa as well, not the poky little "beauty parlours". If you decide to hunt it down don't mention the crazy guy who gave her a lecture after flirting with her . She might frizz your hair.Disclaimer: It may be gone, or you may not find it. Or I may have given you completely wrong directions.

"beauty parlours" are always ladies and children only, at least they are in this part of the world.
Any Indian woman could explain to you why, and the answer doesn't reflect well on males !I'm sure there are plenty of ladies' hairdressers still in other parts of the world, and the unisex ones probably have more to do with commercial, rather than gender-equality, motives!

Ah. The Nick has spoken (?)
Believe me, you haven't lived until you've tried to get a yuppie expat to cut your hair, and horrified her poor staff in the process. Expat wives excluded. PS: Pedant. |

I'm looking to get a stylish haircut when I get to Bombay, and I don't care if the locals think I'm gay or anything. How much am I looking to pay for an upmarket stylist?

I just got my hair straightened a couple weeks back at SQEEZE 2nd cross Lavelle road 41121220, they did a great job! One of their receptionists is not terribly clever so if you feel like the person you talk to doesn't understand you--she probably doesn't and ask to speak with someone else.

Try Salon Jeanne, The Pavilion, Church Street. Their staff has been trained at Toni&Guy.

i go to mystique (unisex) in koramangala - very friendly, able people working there - and the prices are very reasonable.

Thanks for the great tips anar and ChocolatNY! Mystique is within walking distance of my home, while Bounce is walking distance from my office! I'm having the best of both worlds *hehe*
Having worked in China previously where haircuts equal to disaster, I'm really very apprehensive about approaching the salons here. Can I really truly trust them to give me a satisfactory haircut? I'm not going for anything radical anyway, just a trim on my fringe and neatening my frizzed up ends. How much can I expect for a haircut here anyway? |

!The problem with the top salons in Bangalore are that they have good staff when they open, and then seem to lose them after a while. Rather like the good restauarants with celebrity cooks: the third time you go, some wannabe who has picked up a few recipes from the original chef will probably prepare the food you order. Trust me, I know when this happens: the food just isn't the same! Some of this is of course connected with the economics of the business, but oftentimes, the chef needs to be challenged, and serving up one order after another of spagetti bolognaise is a sure recipe for frustration. My niece trained at Morris Masterclass and Vidal Sassoon after learning the basic cuts during a working stint of five years. She set up here in Bangalore, but migrated for more rewarding opportunies after a coupla years. There's just that many "mushroom" cut requests you can take. Funny you should mention China: on a recent trip, I visited the Xintiandi district in Shanghai and toured Vidal Sassoon's spanking new Hair Academy. My Korean friend has opened three outlets in Beijing and he's just won the second place at the L'Oreal Competition. Looks like they do have a market for high end hair styling. The provinces are another ball game altogether, although it was fun getting my hair washed whilst sittihg on a high backed chair placed on the side walk! I guess it's what you're willing to pay for the privilige of being at the cutting edge of fashion (pun intended!). ![]() PS: the Net is replete with similar posts as these: http://www.shanghaiexpat.com/modules...topic&p=247536 Last edited by anton : Jan 16th, 2008 at 01:13.
