Hello! I and two other women friends will be spending approximately 10 days in Bangalore in late October. I am so excited to actually be going to India it is surreal!
What, in the opinion of knowledgable folks, would be absolute must-see/must-do's while in Bangalore? And,what day-trips are worthwhile and important to include? Thanks in advance!
We would love to see some of the bigger temples in the area, as well. Thanks!

For me, it would be a case of leaving Bangalore & going to other areas (eg. Mysore).

Didn't find B/lore very interesting.

Cheers

I've never been too Bangalore, and if I did, it would be for the Western shopping that is available there!

But to a newcomer from outside of India, the most westernised part of India is still, I guess, going to be... India!

Mysore is a better base for day trips in that region. Mysore itself is an interesting city.

Some of the good day tours which you can do from Mysore would include:
Srirangapatnam - for the fort
Belur, Halebid & Shravanbelagola - for the ancient monuments
Bandipur - Wildlife
Coorg - Coffee plantations

These are the ones which I remember...there are other good ones as well (hopefully someone else contributes in later posts).

All these are well connected by KSRTC - "Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation" - which conducts day tours.

A good idea would be to get hold of "Outlook Traveller - 52 Weekends from Bangalore" book. - An excellent buy!

Hmmm....well, thanks, I guess

You see, my step-brother is a visiting professor at Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, so that is the natural place that we would base ourselves out of for this holiday.

From the comments, with the exception of one or two, I get the impression that Bangalore isn't feeling the love!

That being said, I am interested in the possibilty of spending a couple of days in either Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Goa (mind, we are not huge partiers), or Chennai. We won't have the time to do them all, so what would Indiaphiles suggest?

forget kerela goa and tamil nadu. cant do them in 7 days, esp if you are going to be based in bangalore. but 7 days should be about enough to see most of karnataka. try hampi, pattadakkal, bijapur, mysore (srirangapatnam and somnathpur), belur, halebid etc etc.

You may be able to do a bit of Kerala if you fly there and back, in 10 days. More than a bit, actually.

But based in Bangalore, Mysore/Hampi etc would still get my vote.

Hill stations

How would one plan a side trip from Bangalore to the hill stations? Which are best: Coorg, Ooty , Munnar, others? How are they different from each other?
How many days would one reasonably expect to spend to do it right? Thanks. Maureen

Ooty or Coorg can be done after Mysore. (different directions). Browse this forum for more.

I would prefer Coorg. Longer trip, though. With Ooty (and even a little beyond) 2/3 days after Mysore is possible.

For Munnar you will preferably have to fly to Kochi given the time constraints. It's a few hours drive from there.
There may also be a good train connection but longer.

How many days at either? If you want to take a break and relax, at least 4. If not, 2 or even less.

Munnar is one of the best hill stations of the south. Its full of tea gardens. If you want to go to Munnar, u can either fly from Bangalore to Kochi or take a overnight volvo bus from Banglaore or overnight train. From Kochi, its better to hire a taxi as its approx around 150kms from Kochi to Munnar and it will take another 3.5hrs reach there.

These are some of the places in Karnataka.

1) Mysore / Sringapatnam (140 kms from Bangalore)
2) Belur / Halebidu (approx 200 kms from Bangalore )
3) Hampi (overnight bus journey from Bangalore)
4) Coorg (Around 200kms from Bangalore and near to Mysore)
5) Bandipur and Nagarhole wild life sanctuary (Near to Mysore)
6) Jog Falls which is second biggest falls (over night journey from Bangalore)
&) Karwar for its beaches (overnight journey)

Also, you could try to stay in junglelodges if ur intrested in nature. www.junglelodges.com
Kabaini is really good.
