Wanted to supplement SK's take on the Caretaker Lady at GMVN Deval.

She was cheerful and talkative (like Mahesh, the driver) old lady, for-ever sweeping the floors of the TRH and the gardens outside, with a broom in her hand. However, when she was was telling us the story about the fate of her 5 grand-children (sitting on the garden grass-lawn) she was moved to tears and talked in a choked voice. There was a hushed silence in our group, when she finished that sad story. Even Mahendra, our hardened cook-porter, had tears welling up in his eyes (which he tried to hide from all of us).

She was a rare person to meet; seemed to love her (1st) daughter-in-law more than her own son! She was quite determined to bring up those 5 grand-children, as best as she could, under the circumstances.

I was searching for a picture of her, to post here on IM. But could'nt find any ... maybe I didnt take one of her?

Anyway here is a picture of a beutiful flower from the Deval-GMVN garden, to represent her; that I am quite sure she must be tending, herself, daily.

Ah ok, but as I see it goes the long way. From Delhi, I wud try to make it to Karnprayag in 2 hops - relatively simple as km indicates - and then K'prayag to Deval is also relatively uncomplicated.

Thumbs up Consolidate??

Sadanand Kamat jee,

Thanks for completing the exhaustive trek report

May I humbly suggest that you consolidate the whole write-up as an ending post in the same thread??

Also, may I propose to nadreg to put it up as an article?

I think, only Mods have an option to consolidate the various posts .

Yes, you can propose to nadreg to include Roopkund Trek Report as an article .

I don't think KS had taken any medicines during the trek.

2. The guides may not be professionally trained to handle medical emergencies. But they will certainy be able to organise porters/mules to carry the trekker with medical emergencies to the base and from here to the nearest hospital by vehicle.

3. None of us felt even a minor altitude sickness during the entire trek. We had spent two nights at Bedni Bugyal (3470m) and one night at Pathar Nachauni (3810m) before proceeding to Roopkund. Certainly, this helped us in getting better acclimatisation. Also, we were trekking very slowly in higher altitudes which also means spending more time at these altitudes to get acclimatised.

4. We use to carry two water bottles of 750L each filled in at the camps where there were water sources. We never used any water purification tablets. Furthermore, our porters used to carry extra bottles of drinking water. I will like to point out that it is better to drink small quantity of water at short duration. Drinking large quantity of water in one go, while trekking, may result in leg muscle cramp.

5. Yes. Better make it very clear to the mule owner that the loads will have to be carried up to Baguabasa.

Thank you Mr. Kamath, your advise is much appreciated

Except, Bhupendra (the 15-year-old, Debu's son) who was having a headache and feeling mildly unwell at Pathar-Nachani. In fact, as per Debu's advise he did not come with us to Kalu-Vinayak and RoopKund. I gave him a Crocin tablet. He was totally all right after that extra day's rest in our tent. It might have been just a mild altitude sickness for him, as he was at that high altitude first time in his life.

BTW - Some info: Bhupendra is Class 9 school student in Khati village. May-Jun was school vacation time for him. He has never done a trek before. This was to be his first-ever trek higher than Khati village. He said he had to pester his Dad & Mom a lot, to let him come for this first trek, as his school does'nt reopen until 1st July. Initially, his Mom was not keen for him to go. Ultimately she relented and Debu agreed to his joining, as he could be an extra help, carrying luggage and washing the dishes after cooking!

A Pic of Debu & Bhupendra is here: Photo-Link

This is how you can do it too...

It requires at least two separate windows to be opened.

First open the main reply window, by right-clicking on the "post reply" button at the end (of this thread) and opening the result in a new window.

This now is your main new window, you can title it "Consolidated Roop Kund Trek narration" (or something like that). Minimize this window, and you will come back to the original thread.

Now come to your post "part one" and do the same right-click-open-new-window on the "quote" button at the bottom of that "part one" post. You will get that same text in the new window enclosed in open-quote close-quote marks. Remove the marks and you have the bare text. Control-A(mouseover all) and Control-C(copy) in that bare text. Close this window.

Restore the "consolidated" window and do a Control-V(paste) in it. Your part one has now made it to the new post. Minimize this window.

Go to part two. See the quote button beneath? Right-click-open-new-window and same... remove quote tags, CTL A & CTL C, then CTL V in the "consolidated" window.

And so on till part seven.

After all seven parts are entered sequentially, update the new consolidated post. The edit button will be open for some time (three days?) for you to edit it.
.
.
P.S. If I do it, it will come in my name... I want it to come in your name

Before any consolidation is done, may I add my two bits:

If nadreg is going to turn it into an article anyway, no point in consolidating. I believe he has tools at his disposal whereby he can do the job in a simpler fashion. At least that's my guess, from having seen other multi-post reports turned into single articles.

Yes. That was my impression also.

But on a second thought, I felt that consolidation at my end will give me an opportunity to correct spellings/grammar and some minor additions/deletions in the trek reports which I am not in a position to do now .

Avid,

I have completed the consolidation of the Trek Reports. With this, earlier 7 Reports can now be deleted.

Sadanand: I dont think you should delete your story's older-7-posts. Because then Other-IMers posts/replies to earlier parts of the story may go off-sequence ... i.e. not make sense to anyone reading the entire thread in a sequential-from-start way. At least thats what I think - best to leave it to Mods to sort out these issue - KS

Consolidated trek report will make better reading.

As KS mentions no need to delete old posts.
